i can recall one train down the West Coast that was electric and above ground. Wasn't that successful apparently. I think this was in the 1920s. I'll have a look in Lou Ray's EBR book
Ahh, it was built by Baldwin but built for Westinghouse in 1906

Indeed it is. Some references call it the Waratah Tramway, but whatever it's called, it's over to DRR_Fireman for the next question.

To expand - maximum traction trucks - a two axle truck with one wheel bigger than the other... in trams a traction motor was hung on the axle with the bigger wheel. I've noted a picture of an interesting railmotor with at least the forward truck of maximum traction layout. So what line would we have found this interesting beast on..... I suspect it was mechanically driven rather than electric.

EBR had a railcar, that had a single axle at the back and a bogie at the front (M4), the back axle of the railcar having a larger radii wheelset.
Maybe?
