I travelled on this train recently. Despite a claim on another board that it carries fresh air, the front carriage was well loaded, and the rear car had been chartered by a group.
Around 30 people were travelling to the co-ordinated 'Illawarra Fly' bus transfer at Robertson with other passengers exploring the town, with a small number continuing on to Moss Vale. Was the kid at Moss Vale who made a mad dash to get a cloudy shot of an 81 class a board member?
The line from Unanderra to Moss Vale is slow albeit very scenic. I was annoyed that no trains came along on the line south of Unanderra when the train was climbing the hill, as with a decent zoom you could get a fantastic photo of a train on that line taken from an above angle.
All of the 3801 Limited crew were very friendly and welcoming and I would give 3801 Limited 10/10 for this trip. If the loadings such as on this service are regular then I do not think that it has "flown the coop", although better marketing would attract extra patronage. The only thing I was surprised about is that 3801 Limited do not seem to have any trips planned other than the Cockatoo Run.

I think they're having a trip to Bathurst and back on behalf of the ARHS & if the Cockatoo Run does fly out the coop, they still got their charters and their heritage fleet they can hire out to Freight Operators as required to make some dough.

As the person responsible for starting the thread many months ago this was started as I explained waaay back in the first post.
However since there has only be positive news about loadings then SiTWWW shouldnt really worry what was said in another forum (I know what was said and yeah the person will admit they were wrong using 3rd to 10th hand information) but be happy that 3801Ltd obviously are on to a good thing with the Illawarra Fly deal.

I frequently see photos of 3801ltd (owned or leased locomotives, it matters now) locos being used on ballast/spoil/works trains, which is a decent source of income for them.

It has always been my understanding that 3801 Ltd received the benefits of relief from several State and Federal taxes on the basis of it being a Heritage organisation; much like the RTM; RVR; LVR; etc.
The hiring out of equipment under such circumstances allows them to undercut the prices commercial operators need to charge for the same service. This in turn creates animosity and charges of unfair competition. Whether they do or do not undercut is immaterial, there is an opportunity to do so and a perception so. In such circumstances the perception becomes fact with critics.

Predictable response from a pro RTM man.
Suggest you get your facts right before posting or refrain.

MBAX-straight out-there was no need to bring Pro RTM or any of that into this, so don't bring it into this forum-Les was not trying to take sides, promote one over the other (you're blind if you can't see that). Also-he is not claiming it was solid facts, so why have a go at him over it?
Finally-i wish to say that it is rich of you to say "get your facts right or don't post at all", a claim you made at myself and other during the last year-to which i have found you have also had a selective view on certain issues which i have since been given more information by the person(s) in question. My pint here is-don't say it at others if you have done the same yourself-if you do-you are simply being hypocritical

No idea if anyone has posted this yet, but I will anyway.
As you know, the Cockatoo Run/Tree Top Flyer, is a good form of transport for families/couples/individuals without cars to get to the Tree Top Fly as Robertson is just a 10 minute coach trip away and 01ltd have a privately chartered coach/bus to the Fly.

Vintage train boosts Illawarra Fly tourism potential
Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Chairman of 3801 Limited, John Glastonbury, aboard the Cockatoo Run train.
Tourists heading for New South Wales’ latest attraction, the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk, can do so in style aboard a splendidly restored, 1930s-vintage train.
New South Wales Tourism Minister Matt Brown, and other official guests, took the train trip last week for the official opening of the Illawarra Fly, a 500-metre elevated steel canopy at treetop level offering stupendous views of countryside, lake and sea.
Tourism chiefs see the train, operated by not-for-profit enterprise 3801 Limited, becoming an essential part of the Wollongong/Illawarra tourism mix, transferring visitors from Sydney to the new Fly attraction.

The train makes the trip between Sydney Central Station and Robertson Heritage Railway Station in the NSW Southern Highlands on Thursdays and Sundays. Known as the Cockatoo Run, the journey uses the Illawarra Mountain Railway, built between 1927 and 1932. This stretch of track provides one of Australia’s most spectacular rail trips. Aboard the Cockatoo Run, passengers enjoy light refreshments and grand coastal scenery as the train climbs 600 metres, past waterfalls and through dense rainforest, up the Illawarra Escarpment. The train makes a stop at Summit Tank to admire sweeping views over Lake Illawarra out to the Tasman Sea.
A new train package, “Illawarra Treetop Flyer”, incorporates roundtrip travel from Sydney Central with entry to the Fly, located not far from Robertson. This costs $95 for adults and $75 for children, all-inclusive. Discounts apply for families and larger groups.
The Cockatoo Run train uses vintage 1930s carriages, beautifully restored and hauled by a heritage Diesel locomotive. Carriage attendants and buffet staff are all volunteers and boarding the train is like re-entering the gracious Golden Age of railway travel. 3801 Limited is negotiating to lease a steam locomotive, which would lift the operation’s profile, add cachet and boost patronage. It used to have a steam engine, until the NSW Government, through RailCorp, failed to renew the lease. This decision could have finished 3801 Limited, but it fought on, leasing a heritage Diesel locomotive replacement. 3801 Limited remains determined to secure a steam engine.

The Cockatoo Run Train heads through Illawarra rainforest.
Opening the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk after travelling there on the Cockatoo Run, NSW Tourism Minister Matt Brown said visitors who travelled to the Fly on the train could “really appreciate how special this area is.” He said the Illawarra Fly had attracted over 1000 visitors for its opening and was set to attract 200,000 a year, building to 300,000 a year in five years. The Fly employed 16 staff, with visitor spend in the area estimated at $4 million a year.
“We are very supportive of this and know it will be a success,” Brown said.
Speaking later, 3801 Limited chairman, John Glastonbury, said the Cockatoo Run was an integral asset in the Illawarra tourism mix. It provided a novel and enjoyable way for tourists from Sydney without cars to reach the Fly.
The day-trip potential for international and domestic tourists, particularly families, is obvious. A steam engine would make the attraction even more special.

Vince, you're a mate and I don't want to dump on you, but if you believe us to already know something (hence "As you know..."), then we don't need to be told, do we?
If this was a prelude to you posting the quoted article, put it in the same post.
More broadly (ie this is for everyone, not just H1) think about what you are posting, whether it's a picture, a joke or a snippet of information. Have you just posted it on RailBastard*, or some other rail forum? Are you about to? Is it common knowledge? This is not a comprehensive list of the questions you should be asking, but it's the ones that are getting my goat this week. If the answer to any of these is yes, DON'T HIT "SUBMIT".
* If you want it read by as many people as possible, it's probably better to submit here, and NOT submit on RB. I suspect there's one or two on RB that aren't here, but not many. On some othere fora there are NONE. In those cases, if the info is here then it isn't needed at the other joint - if we want to read it we can.

The only thing is, where would it be kept? I would love to hear that Eveleigh was saved but that is highly unlikely. Would class of engine are 'close' too and where was it coming from?
