Stored Cars in Newport?

  monday Chief Commissioner

Hi Everyone,

Is anyone able to provide some info on what cars are stored in Newport, but not operational, either by 707/SRV or DoI in East Block...  Also, would anyone have photos of said rollingstock?

I mean S cars, Z cars, K cars etc...

Like 1AS, 2AS, 751ABK, 782AK etc etc etc.

Thanks for your help!

Cheers,

M

Your best bet, while a bit of a cop out, would be to visit: http://www.steamrail.com.au/gallery/main.php

There you'll find all their rollingstock, serviceable or otherwise.

Hope that's of some assistance! Very Happy

Edit: Embarassed East Block you say, well, that's anyone's guess, apart from a privileged few... Laughing

At the moment, as there's been a reshuffle in East Block:

Inside East Block as a guesstimate:
WW76, SJ281-SJ284 sans bogies? SZ287? 671M and 672M, K183, Taits 471M and 427M, the remains of the American car Victoria, several buses including a 1965 ex-VR Comair (soon to be joined by another one hopefully), Pioneer and Enterprise, 32 and 40ABU, the heritage V cars, a bunch of trams...
Outside East Block:
ACZ260, MTH101-104, BIH181, BIH187, the club car Victoria (is it stored there?  Been in there for ~2 months), 4-wheeled cement pot J16, a KMQ used for shunting, tram Z1 43, Hitachis 221M, 1947T, another Hitachi T, 155M, 195M on ground, DRC41, DRC42, a BN or BRN ex Kerang and two buses.

Outside East Block and allocated to pres groups: L1162, L1169, E1108 or E1106, three V cars (can't recall numbers), and a VLBF allocated to Steamrail.  I might be missing some Steamrail stuff. Is the tuscan PHS Steamrails?

ARHS: oil tank 8, oil tank 52, oil tank 53, oil tank 111, horse box 7FF, guards vans 31CP, 174Z, QB7 with a C class boiler, VFGA3 or 4 (ex S class tender frame), VLAA(UB)52?, HH5, QR1, a pair of VLBF's, a particle board wagon, a cement pot and a KMQ.

More if I think of it.

It's unclaimed.  The ABE is knackered and the BW I think is an underframe only, the I wagons are stuffed and full of asbestos lagging I think?, and the swingdoor D is not much better.

Edit: cpdbear, I think they're on transfers, but I am not sure having not actually had a chance to see them yet.

I suspect there might be a few more scrappings in the next few months with the Kerang cars as well as the damaged Comeng cars possibly being sent off to Sims. Space is becoming a premium and with the franchises possibly changing the less excess useless stuff to be handed over the better.

The I wagons had/have steam boiler press blocks in them. The GYs were full of country car brake blocks. The steam boiler lagging you're referring to was removed a few years ago now.

32D has been parted out for 24D and 12BT. As an aside, 32D has wooden headstocks which made operational restoration problematic, even after 24D was damaged in the 1981? runaway that pushed 107M through the centre wall of the Tarp Shop.

Yes. Refranchising does provide a not to be missed opportunity to scrap all the spare parts that a company has on hand. Plenty of servicable stuff went into the bin when M>Train pulled the pin.

Space will be at a premium when the new Xtraps start to arrive. Newport will be full of new trains again.

I'm gathering that ACZ 260 could join BN 19 & BRN20 on the scrapline too... If I remember rightly BN19 (or it may be BRN 20) has a 4 degree bend in the underframe at it's damaged end (if its BN 19) I can't see why that couldn't be straightened out, the end collision posts & side damage in BN 19 rebuilt & it reenter service, that same for ACZ 260 (straighten the bend in the underframe in the guards cabin & rebuilt as a BZN... BRN 20 is of course beyond repair, scrap it & use the insurance payout for an additional V/Lo centre trailer...

About to be scrapped by Victrack in the next few weeks are: Drum Roll:
4CW, BW's: 64 & 69, 12ABE, 32MT 32D, 31ZD & VVCP12

These look like all the rotten-row wrecks stored in the Trap Shop Yard that are viewable from passing Werribee & Geelong Line trains...

The only question is, how many I wagons are preserved in Victoria? These were once a very common type of goods wagon, and it would be a pity if at least one of them isn't preserved in the museum or on a tourist railway.

I believe that only the non servicable stuff will be disposed of. Like the burnt body beside North Willy station and a few others. Expect the first of the Comeng's to sold off in the next 5 years or so. There will be plenty of spare parts then!
As you well know the tarp shop wrecks are making way for more stabling in the next little while so they have to go somewhere!

Every changeover i know of has resulted in new parts being binned for scrap value. It's very easy to change a green tag for a red one.

Same goes when the Comengs are torched. They will go complete to the scrappers as it costs time and money to strip them for parts.

There were seven 16 ton I wagons, three have been spoken for I'd say by the list provided by ssj.  The remaining four are beyond saving, being more hole than I wagon.

As well, a match truck built off a Tommy Bent has been requisitioned for possible conversion back to a Tommy Bent I wagon.

The VGR has preserved at least one I wagon which is currently at Castlemaine. It was aquired from the Bright Museum in 1999.
