Any idea on overall body width of these trams? The Flexis are only 2.4m wide rather then the usual 2.65m.

Hi not sure where this would fit in, however found this in the Adelaide Advertiser, yesterday. It In a section called the way we were. The snippet dates back to 14th July 1958 and reads.

A New plan for bus stopping places in King William St and North Tce will operate from Sunday, when five more tram routes will be converted to buses. Trams will run on the St Peters, Prospect-Mitcham, and Paradise-Springfield routes for the last time on Saturday night. After that, the Cheltenham and Glenelg, with their teminals in Victoria Square. will be the only trams running through King William St. With the conversion next week, stops for the five bus services already using King William St will be revised.

Just thought I was a good piece of triva.

I can't seem to find any details about the width, but here's some more info.

Quote:
Midland Metro operates 16 trams, numbered 01–16. Some trams have been named after local figures.

The Metro's trams were built by Ansaldo at their factory near Naples, Italy, and are designated T69 (Manchester's Metrolink trams are T68 and T68a). The units have two carriages with a short articulated section in the centre, and are 24m (80ft) long. The top speed is 50mph, but the trams operate within road speed limits when running on-street. Each tram is accessible for wheelchair users.

The system uses 750vDC overhead power supply with single wire pantograph current collection.

The original standard Midland Metro livery of blue body, red front, grey skirt and yellow doors, with a green stripe seperating the blue and grey, is applied to most trams. This has now been replaced by a new Network West Midlands livery (Network West Midlands is a brand name of Centro, the transport authority), comprising a silver body, magenta skirt, magenta area of the cab window and blue doors. So far two trams have been painted in the new livery, the first of which is 09. For pictures of the new livery, see this page

This may seem like a strange idea but with both Melbourne and Adelaide needing extra trams I wonder if CFCLA could move into tram leasing.

From the ADVERTISER, 30/7 :

Tramline plan call

"Design and construction firms are being invited by the State Government to submit proposals for the $162 million tramline extension to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre

"The Government has put out a call for companies experienced in major light rail works, roadworks and bridges to be involved in 'early contract' work.

"Submissions are due by August 26. Work should start early 2009"

Got a new web page on the DTEI dealing with the light rail projects to be carried out.

http://www.dtei.sa.gov.au/infrastructure/coast_to_coast_lightrail

Like the Victoria Square - City West extension, this page will be continually updated as the work goes on. Certainly one to put into favourites if you want to follow this project.

A bit late I admit but the tender for the leased trams for use on the Glenelg line closed on the 19th of August. Does anyone have any idea what was selected?

Just found this on TDU which means the contract has now been signed.

Bombardier to supply SA trams

BOMBARDIER Transportation will supply the South Australian government with four light rail vehicles as part of a $26 million contract.

Bombardier’s Australian plant is based in Dandenong, where it is working on V-Locity trains for the V/Line service.

The company’s German plant will build and deliver the trams for the SA government on top of the nine the firm has already built for Adelaide.

The product is known as the Flexity Tram and delivery will begin in the final quarter of 2010.

Now that would be an interesting sight! Some good old ex-communist block trams cruising the sedate streets of Adelaide!

http://www.hampage.hu/trams/thg2bp/rollingstock.html#Tramcars

This link is to a Hungarian tram gunzels page. By the looks of it there are plenty of the older UV series available but they are fairly old at 1960’s vintage. Or perhaps some of the 1980’s era Tatra T5C5’s are surplus at the moment?

If the UV class are the ones that are set to come here, then I would more then welcome them. I have just heard a couple of audio recordings of them and that is a noise I am willing to listen too! One would hope that a few of the four wheel trailer cars will come with the UVs, they may be some fun (especially since some of them date from 1939).

Link to the audio recordings, go for the second one for the best noise. When you click on the link, right click on it and go to 'save target as' since Windows Media Player doesn't play the file directly from the website.
http://www.hampage.hu/trams/e_hangok.html#uv

EDIT:

I did some extra digging around on the above website and came across this in the recent timeline of the UV class. This does add some extra weight to the rumour.

Quote:
Update, November 2007: The UVs and trailers withdrawn from revenue operation in August were deleted from stock on November 21. This doesn't yet mean that they are written off: they are now on offer to anybody who is willing to pay for them (which will mostly mean "scrap value"). The BKV already selected a few cars for its heritage fleet (3873, 3885, 3888, 3898 and trailers 5869 and 6010), just like a couple of transit associations and individuals.

Yes, but is it disability accessible?

How would you get a wheelchair on board?

(I see Aldi have fold up wheelchairs for $199 on special from next Thursday)
