Some trains used to run in service from Noarlunga Centre to Lonsdale in the evening, as well as Lonsdale to Noarlunga Centre in the morning. These were stabling movement, but were in revenue service.

Wilfy the only railcars on Comrail standard gauge were either CB Railcars (Budd cars) or ex NDH railcars which were simply classed DH from memory. The letter G on Comrail was used for open wagons like the GB or GBX wagons! Cool

David,
The G I was reffering to is the Brand name of the Railcars which was Gloucester and I believe they were narrow gauge, but I need to check.

That was the NDH/DH railcars of which there were six units, they were placed in service in 1952 and were built by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Co.Ltd, UK! The order was through Comeng for these! You are just lucky I happened to have my Commonwealth Railways book close at hand!

I should have also said that G was used for steam locomotive class as well! Embarassed

Hmm, which line was that on?

Cheers,
Ian

There used to be a rail connection from near Osborne Railway station to the freight line which followed Elder Road. I remember reading there was a passenger service which went to Osbourne Station then followed the freight line back to Glanville.
There was a combined service to Tailem Bend, which was then split to run on each ot the Mallee lines I think.
Also regular services Adelaide to Mount Gambier.
And a few cross country services Balaklava to Kadina?

Cheers,
Tony

I'm guessing Pt Augusta to Marree for starters. Port Augusta out to Pimba or thereabouts. Something like that.

The Pimba service was for Woomera passengers, is this not correct?

Yes, I checked a book of mine last night. The service was for Woomera passengers.

There are still many more former services to be listed. I know out in the Murraylands there were branch services to from Karoonda to Peebinga and Waikerie. Down in the SE, during the days of narrow gauge, there was a railcar sevice from Mt Gambier up the Tantanoola line. Also Strathalbyn to Milang, Riverton to Spalding. If PJ Knife is reading this thread, he no doubt could spin off the names of the passenger services on the Eyre Peninsula.

Also the railcars starting with a G were run to Maree, can't think of the name at the moment. Remember seeing of photo on the NRM Website.

Regards,

The Gloucester cars were run to Marree before 1957. I believe though I have no hard evidence for it, that they might have persisted with a weekly run to Hawker into 1958.

After this time CR appeared to have trouble finding work for these cars and they often had their drive shafts removed to enable them to be used as sitting cars, principally on the standard gauge. I am not sure they were used on the Woomera services but they might have been.

They eventually found something of a niche working the Pt Augusta -Stirling North school service with the ex-Reading Railroad Brill trailers, which was hardly an onerous duty. I don't know when this service started but I don't think it lasted past 1971.

I often wonder why CR didn't run this service on the narrow gauge and extend the run up the Pass to Quorn as a workers' train. Lots of CR employees preferred to live in Quorn rather than Stirling North -can't think why . . . Twisted Evil

Two were sent to Darwin for an optimistically mooted suburban service but ended up in the same role as most of the standard gauge ones - air-conditioned sitting cars on the Larrimah mixed.

Didn't one country service terminate at Port Dock rather than Adelaide for many years?

Probably could have for a few years, up until the Saltia bridge was sideswiped; don't know the dates off the top of my head though.

There was a timetabled service from Gawler to Riverton in the 1950s. I loosely recall reading of a timetabled service from Gawler to Kapunda as well which ran very early in the morning.

Don't forget the short but important runs like Terowie to Peterborough connecting more important services. Barossa services didn't always run to or from Adelaide, many ran to or from Gawler. There were timetabled services to Mt Barker I think in the 1950s. A service operated from Angaston to Truro before passenger service curtailment in 1968. Services direct from Adelaide to Truro according to all timetables I've read appeared to be long obsolete by the early 1960s.
