Hi everyone
With SZ 287 and the SJ cars sitting in Newport I was wondering who owns them..... and what plans there might be for them? Not really knowing much about them, when was SZ 287 last used? I think (only what I have read through magazines) it is a very unique carriage that should be restored and appreciated.

They are to remain stored at this stage, as there is no use for them and they require Z car bogies (none spare AFAIK) due to the brake rigging arrangement. I think the SZ ran with the SJ's on the last "Vinelander" in 1993.

according to Peter J Vincent's excellent cd.
SZ 287 started life as VAM 1
"VAM 1 was the only carriage in the class.
It was a 20 berth sleeping and sitting car. It entered service in 1963 and seems to have been a spare sleeping car for the standard gauge service Melbourne to Sydney.
Through the years it has been noted in Broad Gauge service on the 'Overland'. This may have occurred during workshops maintenance times when it would have been transferred to broad gauge.
SZ
It was recoded to SZ 287 in 1983.
It was noted in storage in 1993."
The SJ's were originally Overland cars.
There are pic's at http://www.pjv101.net/
cheers

VAM 1 was odd because it was one of the few VR carriages with doors at only one end.

The SZ was also used for various management - board & vice regal trains, It was chartered in the early 1990s to Adelaide and surrounds and was also used on the Overland during the pilots dispute.
It was the Spare car for the vinelander and used when SJs where under overhaul-repairs also at holiday times and for package tour groups.
One of the 4 SJ cars was stripped internally to provide components for Mitta Mitta , & SJ 283 was overhauled not long before the vinlelander finished and was in pretty good nick.
There have been persistent rumors that one roomette & one twinette wil eventually find there wasy into the NRM., returned to former overland guise.
The lack of retention toilets an difficulty in converting them to this waould see them unlikely return to service even if the vinelander ever returned.

It not a rumor, it's official - announced at last nights NRM meeting. Allambi will be returning to SA to take up residence at the NRM. It has been donated to the museum (without bogies) by the Victorian Government via VicTrack. The NRM have started a campaign to help raise funds to transport it. It is expected to cost $20,000 to transport without bogies. Once in Adelaide it will be placed on a set of ex broad Overland bogies that the museum already has in its possession.

Do you know if the bogies are the initial Pullman style bogies that they were originally delivered with or the usual Commonwealth Steel bogies?

They are the usual Commonwealth type bogies as used under all the Overland in later life!

Thanks for the photos mate, looks like the old Overland livery is starting to show through on SJ 284 on the roof and above the concertina.
