There's no mayeb - Ballarat East was my nominated station. The second set of gates were installed in 1900, and still existed in 1989, I suspect...

Over to Penov, and I can fly away safe in the knowledge that I am no longer the quizmaster.

Thanks John and have a good trip.

To all posters - there seems to be a problem with RP --- when you come to submit a post it prints an error message and you don't go through immediately. My guess is it might go off line soon for repairs.

I will draft a question and post hopefully in an hour or so if the forum is still running.

The next question follows up on a recent post which mentioned triangles or turning loops in lieu of turntables. Victoria had very few compared to other states, and I think VR had more triangles on their lines in NSW than in Victoria. NSWGR had over 50 triangle junctions and the most well known one in Vic would have been the one on the Inner Circle in the metropolitan area known as the “Northcote loop” which was used for turning trains in the 1930’s and 1940’s.

I have one in mind in country Victoria which was quite a big one and was used for turning trains as well as locomotives. It was shown on the signal diagram as “Reversing Loop”. Where was it ?

Sorry to jump in after Penov's question. There were four crossings in country Victoria which had two sets of gates: Maitland Street, Geelong B, Ballarat East, and Korong Vale A; those at Maltland Street were altered later to one set covering the outer two of the four tracks only, leaving a gap when the gates were open for road traffic.

I suspect Maitland Street was the set of gates MOM was thinking of when he answered Geelong A. It was, after all, only a short distance away, and appears on the same diagram in the VRHistory notes.

To recap, we are looking for a station with a reversing loop. The station platform was only 100 yards long.

That didn't last long . Boss has got it with Yallourn. Interesting to note that it was near the junction with the railway to Brown Coal Mine which was the original name of Yallourn North until early 1950's when the main street of the town fell down into the open cut. There was only one building left from the main street and it is now the Brown Coal Mine Museum.

Over to Boss.

Well, here is another "quickie" to keep the ball rolling...

I am looking for a branch railway that started off as a tramway whose construction was funded by the Victorian Government Public Works Department as distinct from the Board of Land and Works (the official name of the Railways Construction Branch).

Looks like we n eeed to kick this along with a clue :

The township at the end of the line is a ghost town today with street signs pointing through the scrub.
