You too can drive trains, in New Zealand. They turn their country green and gold, lay out the welcome mat, and you can train to be a locomotive driver.

There will be a school for Tranz Metro Locomotive in 2009
We are currently seeking expressions of interest from candidates who are wanting to become Locomotive Engineers. Because there is a lot of responsibility that goes with driving a mainline train, we are looking for our best people for the job. To get through our selection process, you will have to be able to pass a medical examination, a range of tests including concentration and rules and regulations a personality assessment and a formal interview.
We're looking for people that contribute and value teamwork, have clear communication skills and are safety conscious. You also need to be flexible when necessary, able to follow rules and instructions, learn and retain information and are customer driven. Because of the autonomous nature and high level of responsibility you will need to be mature enough to meet the responsibilities and competencies for being a loco driver.
The steps in the selection process are:
1 Shortlisting
2 Initial assesment
3 Psychometric Assesment
4 Interviewing
5 Reference Checking
6 Offer and acceptance
The application process takes approximately 45 minutes please allow for this before you proceed.

Make sure you check your eligibility to work in NZ before you apply. Good luck to all applicants.

I think Australian citizens get special work privileges for NZ through the reciprocal visa arrangements, but anyone who's actually looked at this properly could provide some definitive info for people who are interested.
