Hi all

I had two friends aboard last night's Melbourne XPT, who've both told me they were 4 hours late after the XPT was delayed at Goulburn due to a freight train spilling canola oil along the line.... or something of that nature. (Note: Both do not know each other, and were travelling in different cars, do I gathered it wasn't porkies!)

Haven't found anything about the incident, so I've become intrigued. Any further details on what happened? I didn't know Canola oil was conveyed by rail!

Thanks!

Cheers

The 6:22pm Endeavour from Campbelltown to Goulburn had a "fun" run south of Moss Vale due to this, flying through Exeter due to the oil making the track too slippery to apply the brakes and had to set back.

Passengers were asked which stations they were travelling to, intention was to skip Tallong if no intending passengers but one person wished to alight. Slow run before and after each station.

Strange that the XPT would be delayed 4 hours due to it, the Endeavour was only 20-25 mins late. I presume that they must have been doing something to clean up?

Hope that this is of some use, Maikha! Smile

nfo for Friday 26th September
South - 2.00am. Due to a Freighter issue the 8.40pm Sydney to Melbourne XPT service has been delayed at Goulburn. A track inspection is has been conducted and it is estimated that the XPT will depart Goulburn at approximately 2.30am, up to 180 minutes behind schedule.

Due to the above delay the 8.30am Melbourne to Sydney XPT service will have a delayed departure time. Refer to this website for futher updates.

From countrylink web site, actually the Sydney XPT today delayed by 1hr and 10mins

Some gaps I can fill in .

Yes rogue grain train hauled by an 81 and a 48 managed to spill canola (fine oil seed) on the line between Moss Vale and Caragable making the down lines to Coota and points west very slippery .

The Maggot was held for an extended period at Goulburn before being worked (SPA'd) from there to Yass in the DD via the up main .

Cargill's did convert several ex-fuel pots for Canola Oil movements around 1999-2000 I seem to recall. They were mainly seen operating between Narrabri West and Kooragang Island. They were coded the NTOF wagons.

Tim

Yep, not porkies. I was on that train which was terminated at Albury and we had to catch a coach to Melbourne. I think we were about 4 1/2 hours late. It apparently was Canola seed that was spilled and the train had to go back to Goulburn while they attempted to clean the tracks ... that's what the conductor told me. I woke at approximately 6. am and looked out the window expecting to be near Seymour and we were at Harden. Rolling Eyes

We at "MSV" have been loading canola trains at "IHB" over the past couple of weeks, the train runs back up the "HILL" as 9821 & has been going 2 unload at parks? & other locations out that way ( I think). last few runs that it has done, the train has run as to 81's+20 wagons for about 1300T. It was running today with 8173,8160 at the head.

Yes. It has happened before and probably will again. As the XPT, Xplorers and Endeavours do not have sanding equipment they have been and will be held back to follow a freight service that will drop sand and clear the oil from the rails. This naturally causes a trickle on delay to the passenger service.

Canola Oil is conveyed from Manildra to Port Botany fairly regularly now in bulk bladders fitted inside a normal 20' container.
