Skylark teen loses leg

A TEENAGE boy's leg was severed when he fell under a train at Eltham station on Saturday night.

The 17-year-old fell on to the tracks between two carriages about 9.45pm.

Police said the boy and a friend had been standing between the carriages when the train pulled into the station.

His friend jumped safely on to the platform, but the injured boy jumped in the other direction, hit a fence, and bounced back under the carriage.

The train pulled out while he was on the tracks, trapping him and severing his leg at the knee.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman Ray Rowe said the boy was lucky to have survived the shocking accident.

"His leg has been severed, and it's surprising that he didn't sustain life-threatening injuries, given the circumstances," ambulance spokesman Ray Rowe said.

Paramedics had had difficulty stabilising the boy, because he was trapped under the train, he said.

Sgt Grant Mitchell, from Eltham police, also said the boy was fortunate to have survived the tragic accident.

"It must have been very distressing for everybody who was there, and for the emergency crews who arrived to help him," Sgt Mitchell said.

He said it looked as though the boys had been skylarking.

"He should have known that something could go wrong, and that he could have been seriously injured or killed," Sgt Mitchell said.

"We have to get through to kids that there are times in your life when you have to consider what you are doing.

"I just feel for his family. It would have been a shocking phone call to get."

Connex spokeswoman Kate De Clercq said the company would be investigating.

"We will review the CCTV footage and talk to the driver," Ms De Clercq said.

"The driver will also be offered counselling."

Train services on the Hurstbridge line were cancelled after the accident.

The boy was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition.

A hospital spokesman said yesterday afternoon that he was in a stable condition.

Well I his days of messing about on the train are over, and probably his friends too.

Note to all kids thinking about doing something really stupid on the train, you only have to loose a limb once to realise that it was not worth it.

How can the report call it an accident?
An accident is something that cannot be foreseen or prevented.
This was plain stupidity, ending in self-inflicted wounds.
For heaven's sake, ;let's tell it as it is, very loudly - if it stops just one young person from trying a similar stunt, it's worth it.

Unfortuantely as sad as it is for the teenager to have lost it, which i do have sympathy for as he will be spending the rest of his life without a leg basically from the knee downwards, as no one should really have to deal with it, I find it interesting how the Sgt of Police say 'He should have known..' instead of the usual press release of 'Connex are investigating on how to make this crossing section fool proof'.

One thing that makes me wonder is, is there more to the story? were they getting away from an AO? or just the sake of not being bothered to walk a few metres inside the carriage and walking through the side carriage door.

there were videos on you tube of fools doing this and i have seen others do it myself,

I honestly don't belive that AO's were in the picture, also it would have been mentioned by now because the media would be able to continue on with there neverending AO's are bad rant

No matter how stupid it is to dice with trains, it's a tragedy that the kid now has to pay for a moment's foolishness for the rest of his life. Nobody could argue that a lifetime of disadvantage, repeated medical expenses for years or even decades, possibly lessened job prospects, etc are a punishment that fits the crime. A more fitting consequence would be something on the scale of three broken ribs, which would heal within six months leaving him sadder and wiser.

The only good outcome would be if several hundred other kids learn sense through this.

Umm first post here.

This kid was a good friend of mine, and it saddens me to see the lack of respect some of you people can have over the internet. Making fun of someone's loss because you won't get caught or have no repicussions is a horrible thing to do. And in my opinion is a show of lower standings than the stupid act my friend did. Just because you can talk down on someone and judge them as a person without ever meeting them doesn't mean you should, I feel it shows a true picture of you as a person and can you tell me it looks much better than what he did?

I'd also like to state that the story which the media has given is a stretch of the truth.

He was an awesome skater, talented singer and just the general life of the party. Whenever you were with him you'd know you would have a smile on your face. Hell, i've even talked to a friend that went and visited him on the day of it happening, and he said he was joking around a little bit in the hospital keeping his hopes up.

This guy is a real trooper, and i just want to wish him the best of luck.

Welcome 'TheMessage' to Railpage Australia™

I respect what you have said about your friend, & as i stated earlier i find it quite sad *literally* that it unfortauntely happened. But whether or not it is sad, Your friend should not have put his life possibly at risk, when he could have just easily used the carriage door. There is one positive side and that might be that other people might think back to this event before doing the same.

I hope he is alright, as someone said earlier, No one should have to deal with the disadvantage of missing a limb. , & I'm Not saying what he did was right or acceptable either but He can't bring the leg back that he lost, so hopefully other people will notice the dangers before they do similar things. That's my thoughts on it.

Now sorry to be a bit of a sour, but would you care to enlighten us to the "True" Story?

Firstly, I've got nothing against skaters or any type of sport like that (I was a skater/BMX'er) But I know that sometimes skaters can do idiotic things, generally to act cool, but to supposedly try and jump from the gangway to the platform isn't exactly an Eienstein thought now is it?

Did he not realise that the train had functioning doors?

Hmmmm no mention of the Emergency Services, Station Staff, Driver...or the effect this would have on them. As a Driver myself, I see this kind of thing regularly...young males skylarking with a moving train. It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt, then its the "Poor me" syndrome.

I am sick and tired or being informed by passengers of someone smoking between carriages, I then to go back and request that they get back into the carriage, only to have them tell me to smeg off. I don't care, I am paid to drive the train, if you get injured by doing something stupid then it is your problem! I will call the ambos, police, metrol whoever you want but I still don't care!

This was not Connex's fault, the fault lies with the kid who lost part of his leg. He was being a twat, there is a perfectly good carriage door that he could have used but instead took a risk and got his asre kicked by the train.

I hope that this incident prevents others from trying this, your friend could try to teach other youths not to do stupid things around moving trains by what happened to him, that is a positive, and I would respect him for doing such a thing!

Not sure whether this was addressed at me specifically or not, but you have to admit the way he had his leg severed was pretty funny.

I don't have any sympathy for the kid either, as his injuries are all self-inflicted and would have been prevented had he used one iota of common sense.

The punishment may not reflect the perceived severity of the actions, but he certainly knew what the consequences could have been. If you've got a problem with the consequences, take it up with the laws of physics.

DrWaddles is right, the kid did it himself. He knew what could happen being a moron on the train. It's like hanging your head out of a car window and getting your head taken off, you shouldn't have done it. He probably didn't "deserve" what he got, but he knew what could have happened and that is what happened and the result is as shown.

No one is laughing at the kid's misfortune or anything, we are just calling him an idiot because he was stupid enough to exit a train that way without thinking. And don't say he did think, because even the most dim witted person alive could figure out how dumb that was by a most simple thought.

No sympathy from me, but I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
