New ticket system for Adelaide's public transport.

I'm sure most of you are already aware that the existing Crouzet ticket system is being replaced. The latest news from the ADVERTISER (1/10)

"The State Government yesterday called for the expressions of interest to supply a multi-million dollar ticketing system on Adelaide's public transport system.

It is likely to involve a combination of rechargeable Smartcards, and disposable magnetic tickets to cater for single trips.

The State Government set aside $29 million over four years to buy and implement the sytem in the last Budget, but said yesterday it did not have an a definitive time frame for its implementation. Expressions of interest would be accepted until November 25"

The tender for the smart card has just been released by the DTEI with a closing date of November 25.

From what Pat Conlon has said they could be the size of a credit card, one hopes not, but they usually go against the grain on these things, so it is not what the public wan't, but what we give them! Rolling Eyes

The Perth SmartRider system seems to work well.

This isn't rocket science: problems experienced in Sydney mostly related to politics between carriers: the authorities there needed to integrate the system first then introduce a smart-card, but they tried to do both at once, and the integration fell over so the software for the system had heaps of specification creep and consequential cost blow-outs.

The major thing that can go wrong in a simple system like Adelaide is the user not clocking off after a trip.

Adelaide has actually been quite smart is waiting to go to smart cards now. They have experiences in Perth and Brisbane with working systems, Melbourne for a half done, not quite right system, and Sydney for a total failure. Internationally, London and Singapore have been working for a while now. The decision to wait until the technology has matured slightly, from how it was only a couple of years ago, is a good move.

Plus, unlike other cities, Crouzet provides a good base to move from. Crouzet already provides for integrated tickets and Adelaide people are used to logging on each boarding. All that needs to happen, is to add a log off component. The ticket products in Adelaide are already matured, with multi discounts and a range of products that most people are pretty happy with. The ticket products (the single zone, and the high fares for people travelling short, but more than two sections) don't seem to raise too many complaints to the media etc.

From what I can see, the only benefit the smart card will bring to Adelaide is increased reliability by removing the magnetic stripe, online (etc) recharge options, and better data for planners by adding the ability to analyse where people commence, and end, their journey on the network.

A great number of people have a keycard that allows them access at work. These keycards could be used as identification for the TA traveller as well. This would give the answer to having an extra card in a lot of cases and would remove the need for a "smart card" system as all the operation of fare calculation would then be removed from the passenger and only exist in the computer system. This would still have problems with employees moving from one employment to another and having to give up their keycards.

Logging on and logging off the trip... NO CHANCE! Adelaide will now only ever have timed trips, no politician would be brave enough to take it from us.

The RFID tags have some issues very minor at that, which could prevent them from being a ticketing system.

How I think it could be done:

smart card is loaded with x trips.
interpeak = 1 trip
peak = 2 trips
dayticket = 3 trips

the trigger for a normal ticket becoming a day trip (for the day) would be using 3 trips worth of credit in one day.
