Gday guys (and gals if we have any)

This question is sorta 2nd hand coming from a relative who lives in the Blue Mountains and has some knowledge about trians. Me being from Brisbane means I know squat about NSW trains.

He inquired to me about Pacific National changing their set up for running Coal Trains on the Western Line through the Blue Mountains. Apparently they have gone from Quad heading to triple heading and with new (actually maybe just different) wagons. So just some general information on what they are currently running would be much appreciated. He doesn't need to know times or anything just the general set ups. And if possible why the change.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers James

Mate I would suggest having a look in the sightings thread under the Sydney Goods Lines section as I and many others have posted sightings of Coal Trains that have crossed the Blue Mountains on there way to Pt Kembla.

Hope it helps Very Happy

Close...

Loco multiples are load related. The triple loco hauled trains are 3600 tons or less (1200t per loco due to the 1/40 grades) and there are a few new (old) rakes running around made up of (old) 76 ton wagons, as well as two types of rakes of 100 ton wagons. Four locos haul up to 4500 tons or less due to drawgear limitations. There are 82, 81, GL and G class locos, generally with 82s leading.

The main reasons for the mix and match circus is so that the Northern Coal Division (ie Hunter Valley) can have all our good stuff and we get left with all the leftover rubbish wagons and sho itty hand me down locos. Razz

James, that is about it and the (1200T) grades mentioned are nowhere near the blue mountains, they are between Como and Sutherland. The Zig Zag area would be less per loco, but bank engine assistance is employed there. Going west, the trains are empty, so usually only 2 of the locos are actually running.

Lithgow - Zig Zag is the same for load purpose as Georges River - Waterfall. What goes up one will go up the other, and bank engine working of coal trains up either would be very much the exception these days.

From what I've witnessed, they all seem to be running most of the time. Two L3/L4 locos on an empty rake of 45 NHSH or equivalents, plus two dead 132 tonne locos (plus 10% for being dead), would be getting close enough to the full load on the down between Valley Heights and Katoomba to annoy both the drivers and control. Three out of four locos powering would be a good compromise. I have a feeling, though, that most of the coal blokes are more interested in getting home than saving fuel for the company they love so dearly. If the coal blokes want to correct that assertion, please go right ahead.

Cool

Each train leaves Inner Harbour with enough engines (usually) for the full load it will return with. No banking required anywhere. Normal practice is to leave one offline for the empty journey, but it's common enough to leave them all running and use less notches....it uses the same amount of fuel either way.

Are you saying that the PN Coal division don't rent PN Intermodal or PN Bulk Products locos occasionally?

No not at all old son, just a bit of tongue in cheek directed at Grantham as far as the GL's down south go. Just a bit of Zig Zag humour!
