A $30 million contract to upgrade Tasmania’s rail network has gone to Queensland Rail (QR) and Tasmanian-based Van Ek Contracting.

Tasmanian Infrastructure Minister Graeme Sturges announced the contract would cover the replacement of 20 kilometres of rail and 140,000 sleepers.

“The planning work will get underway within two weeks with site works expected to get underway in November.

Rail improvement plans for South Line as of June 2007 in the following document:
http://www.transport.tas.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0020/16562/Southern_Transport_Investment_Program_Internet_FINAL_COMBINED.pdf

I don't know how accurately this describes the current plans as announced this week by Graeme Sturges.

Cheers,
DPJ

That's probably more to do with the media's love of "copy & paste" than anything else

How true Stuart I wrote a letter to the editor of the Examiner recently in reply to Geoff Pages desire for B triple trucks and dual highways in Tasmania
The editor emailed me to say it was too long(320 words) and could I cut it down. In reply I said how could I get my message across if I couldn't have the same right of reply space. I asked if there was anything in my letter that deserved investigating,(no reply). Yesterday I noted the Minister for Health was given about 50 words longer than I to reply to a criticism, just goes to show depends who you are and also shows the only media that appears to do any investigative journalism is the ABC 4 Corners program.
Anyhow I should post the letter on this forum.

A good way to get around this would be to break your letter up into media friendly bite size chunks then farm the bits out to friends to send in consecutively. Not only does that then get all the message through, but also gives the impression that there is widespread public support for the issue!

Good news, Chas Kelly has pulled out from buying PNT. Reckon he worked out he'd loose money on it.

Only because he wont spend any money unless he has to!

Could well happen, would serve PN right if they cant sell it, or loose a lot of money if they do. Any company who brought it would need deep pockets, and with the finance market the way it is some companies may not have those deep pockets atm.

Could we see a TGR reformed until a new buyer comes along in the future, the Gov spend a few million on locos & rollingstock and some operators might be interested then?

Depending when Kelly pulled the pin, if it was only this week - it may not be sold before the end of the month as PN had hoped.

Watch this space!

Deep Pockets? From what i've heard, PN want something like 40m-90m.

For what? Don't know what assets of PNT are worth that whopping number

Dunno what they are asking - what did Burkhardt pay for it in 1997?

The current world financial turmoil is probably holding the sale up as well.
