On Sunday 5th of October 2008, while riding the railmotors from Ardlethan to Beckom with LVR, I was with my family in the front passenger section. We were only one of many numerous families with children and there were children in the drivers cab as well, enjoying the ride. As I looked out the front windscreen there were 2 photographers standing on the track taking photos. The driver sounded the horn several times. When the Photographers did not move, he held the horn down and slowed the railmotors as fast as he could. The photographers moved off the track only at the last minute.
The Parents on board only became aware of how serious this incident could have been when we arrived at Beckom and the driver was visibly shook up!!
The Sad thing is that these Bloody Idiots Probably didn't understand the full consequences of their actions that could have been fatal and left a lasting scar on the driver, families aboard and the children in the cab. As well as the potential to put LVR out of Action for Good!!!!
My Family and I praise the driver for his fast thinking and hard work over the weekend. We'd also like to thank the tireless volunteers that run LVR trips to places like Ardlethan. Please see our photos of this weekend on a seperate thread.

Agree there very stupid people.. why wasnt someone smarter and take their details for tresspassing?
Ive seen some near car crashes on rail line but photographers surely can use common sense and get out of the way sooner.
If they were Railpage Australia™ people or enthusiasts doesnt matter they are reckless and doesnt help the communityin general.. let alone the stress and annoyance they cause the rail operators

I agree, these people are idiots. sadly there are too many of these idiots in the general community. Yesterday, when 3830 came to Moss Vale on the Cockatoo Run (Treetop Flyer), I saw at least 10 people standing on or near the edge of the platform as and Xplorer approached the station, no one moved from where they were standing and I saw at least 3 people who nearly got hit! These people were not young and foolish, most of these people were actually about 30-60 years old. I even saw one bloke who jumped off the platform to get his two year old son's bottle of sprite from the tracks What a f*cking idiot.

"Where do they find such men?"
Quote the famous line from the 1950s.
F'ing idiots i agree - seems men over 30 havent got clues either .. which is a shame.
If you need to be 10cm off the passing train, then you dont need a brain...
Same with trains in general.... in Cityrail operations i see people stand way over the yellow lines as the trains pull into most stations.
They think their safe on the platfrom been 10-20cm off the train but little do they realise.

Sounds like SRV's Last Steam to Albury trip all over again with what happened at Glenrowan. The driver there had to big hole the steam train (Emergency Brake Application) to pull up because of some twit who was taking a photo in the middle of the track!
Its not good and some photographers need to realise that the 'perfect shot' isnt in the middle of the track or anywhere near the line when a train is bearing down on you! Utterly disgraceful behaviour and it gives the gunzels out there who do the right thing a very bad name!

I agree and the last thing we need is our hobby to be banned cause of people who have to break the law just to think they will have the better shot, let alone get in font of other people's photo's and videos.

It's people like these who have gotten all the fences erected all over the place. On sunday I discovered they'd fixed up the hole on the fence I use for taking photos That was about the last spot where you could a decent wide angle shot with nothing in the way. I never actually go through the hole ont the tracks, but just stick my camera through to the other side of the fence.

Who thinks this is a new phenomina? A reason why photographers are disliked intensely by crews for ages past. A reason why few enginemen would actually identify themselves as photographers, owing to not just the ridicule we copped, but some of the events that everyone went through.
The problem has gotten worse, with more & more being irresponsible, the credentials seems to be when the camera covers the eye, it shuts out light to the brain. Worse still are those trying to align their rear view on their snappy happy cameras as they wave them all over the place.
In many ways, the extrta burden also has come about owing to many in the general public also attaining an interest in railways, especially with steam, & they have no idea of anything close to safety consciousness. They lean out, & over anyone, on the edges of platforms etc.
Watch them catching their commuter trains, as the announcement for their approaching train, & they all crane their necks out over the copping. Almost headless chooks.
I guess as they all strive for that once in a life time shot, they may find out that it just might be that shot.

And to think of it, it's quite sad that many of us are in the same catagory as these idiots.

I remember this one time I was watching a porno with two girls going at it sprawled across some railway tracks. I assumed they'd found a disused railway to film it on but as it was getting to good part the headlight of what turned out to be a freight train appeared around the corner. There was seriously less than 20m when they eventually jumped out of the way. I can only wonder what the driver was thinking!
I know porno is about taking risks and all but this was just ridiculous.

I do recall water being thrown out of loco's in days gone by.
Perhaps a bucket of sand is more in the order now.
