I visited Woomelang station on Friday and I noticed a second platform,
the Victorian Station Histories website
http://www.vrhistory.com/Locations/index.htm
shows that the second platform was added in 1989, for what reason was it added, was it so passenger trains could pass each other at Woomelang

The second platform was provided at Woomelang on the trailable loop as Up and Down overnight trains "The Vinelander" used to cross there in their last days. The trains did a full crew change of Conductors and Buffet Staff so that Melb crews worked Spencer St - Woomelang return, and Mildura crews ran Mildura - Woomelang - Mildura return .

According to the above Woomelang history, trailable points and a second platform were provided in 1989.

The NSP cross in the final days of the Vinelander was at Emu Loop, which replaced Sutherland. After the vinelander ceased running the transhipping platform was relocated to Dimboola Loop I believe. I don't believe Vinelander crews ever changed over at Woomelang.

Was at VLp when the platform was put in . It was definitely built initially in 1989 so that Mildura Connies and Buffet crews could return to Mildura, and Melb Connies and Buffet Crew could return to Spencer St. Prior to that they worked through and it was most un-popular shift .

The Crossing Loops on the Mildura line are set up with trailable points. where the platforms are in the single line section no problem . But when platform is on loop then it presents problems with passenger trains crossing with the trailable points, as one train will arrive on the non paltform road . So in this case only a second platform was put in .

No such platform exists at Dimboola Loop.

However Murtoa Loop did have a small platform, up to a few years ago.

Sutherland used to have a small metal platform, quite narrow, between the 2 running roads. The locos on each Vinelander would pull up to the platform, the crews would swap over, then they would pull forward again to let the on-train crew swap over.

Don't know if it's still there, perhaps it was transferred to Emu loop when the crossing point shifted.
