We all know how much of the rail system in this state has been closed or removed. However, it only becomes truly apparent when you see the changes on maps. I have also taken the liberty of not only removing all the long closed lines but also closed stations/locations that aren't still in use as passing loops.

The system at it's greatest extent c.1950.

As the system stands today.

Makes you think doesn't it?

I reckon the original railmap is from either 1958 or 1959, as there is no railway showing between Grange and Henley Beach, which closed in '57.

Also if ever you have the opportunity, take a look at the Tramways Map of Adelaide prior to '57. I don't imagine that in the next 50 years the tram network yet to come will be as extensive as it became in the first half of the last century.

I thought that when I visited the rail museum a couple of years ago where you press the buttons over the decades to see how the network has changed.

I guess economic reality of some lines just makes it not feasible.
