ABB Grain and Genesee & Wyoming’s new rail agreement.

Australian premier agribusiness, ABB Grain, and rail-freight transportation operator, Genesee & Wyoming Australia, are close to signing a five-year broad gauge agreement to annually move up to 300,000 tonnes of Victorian grain.

The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding ahead of finalising the agreement which would start on November 1.

ABB’s executive manager – group operations, John Warda, said the new agreement would provide “transportation certainty” for Victorian grain growers, rail capacity for ABB’s exports from Victoria and service the company’s investments in the Port of Melbourne grain terminal and Australian Bulk Alliance grain receivals sites.

“The agreement provides for one grain train of up to 40 wagons and capacity to move up to 300,000 tonnes of grain for export, complementing rail freight capacity provided by other grain companies in Victoria,” Mr Warda said.

“The broad gauge grain train will also be available for use by other customers.

“Separately, ABB’s agreement with GWA for moving grain by rail in South Australia provides the company with a capability, if need be, to shift grain on standard gauge lines from the Wimmera region into the Port of Melbourne or Port Adelaide.

Mr Warda said rail was crucial for the cost-effective movement of grain in Victoria and ABB Grain was very pleased to have been able to negotiate the long-term agreement with GWA.

Genesee & Wyoming Australia’s Managing Director Bert Easthope said: “The planned agreement with ABB for some of GWA’s rail assets to be deployed in Victoria to meet a demand was a further extension of the relationship and arrangements that ABB and GWA will have in place for SA. This will create flexibility for both organisations in meeting the transport task of the grain industry.”

Will ths servce use the existing SA broad guage stock or will it be new acquisitions frp, Victoria?

They only seem to be talking a single train of 40 wagons.

ElZ is contracted to AWB, may see some competition but its unlikely as I think this is part of the grain industry sorting itself out due to the wheat deregulation. Hopefully GWA & ElZorro will work together and push PN out by showing customers the difference in attitude.
But more interestingly will this see ther return of broad gauge Alcos (700's) to Vic? I'm sure there are quite a few interested gunzels on that note!

Mate, if that loco pulls as hard as you do, it'd move anything.
I'd still rather have an ALCo.

Any idea Bing if the rake of 40 or so AHDL hoppers stored in Dry Creek South Yard are going as well or will GWA be using a leased fleet from some other source?

Conflicting stories on that - I'm not sure GWA even know exactly what they will end up using Razz

A pair of GM's will not pull the load in Vic guys, a forty wagon grain train would need at last 4 GM's to get over Warrenheip.

Hope GWA did their numbers right!

Anyone have an idea on how they plan to train the drivers in Vic Question

I was going to say 'do they run trains that long' but I checked some photos, and PN does. El Zorro was doing about 30 wagons.

However they don't take them over Warrenheip much these days, usually running down to Geelong though Meredith. El Zorro was using 2x S classes and 3x T classes on that run, which isn't far off 4 GMs.

My thoughts too. I reckon they would need at least 3 GM's to do the job or rely on hiring wrecks from the preservation mobs. The 700's came to mind as there is only 3 out of the 5 currently running, one of the non running units is 706 which is BG plus if they shuffle the 830/900's around they could probably send 2 to Vic. Maybe thats what the two 900's came back from Whyalla for? As for wagons ElZorro currently has about 25 AHGX's on lease from GWA so I think they will lose them.
Drivers? Who knows they may be able to poach some from PN depots they only need a couple qualified to get started. But like all operators they will probably struggle to get enough though; from what I hear all the time is no operator has anywhere near enough drivers and rely solely on massive overtime to keep the trains moving.

The 2 900s that came to Adelaide from Port Lincoln were only here for electrical work that couldn't be carried out there and both have since returned to narrow gauge.

Hopefully its 706 but with what other locos and why would they place 2 GMs on BG? Arent the GMs needed some where else.
