Hey Guys,

Cheers for the welcome.

Really looking forward to it in any case, even if I do have to commute for a years. Had my last shift at my old job last night, it was a good job, but had been there for 10.5 years so it was time for a change.

Always wanted to be on the trains, so this is a fantastic opportunity & I had to jump at it! Very Happy

Only 5 days till start date now!

Al.

Hi guys,

Im currently about to start the hsc exams and am looking to be a Guard for Cityrail. I have read all the pages in this thread and it seems like its a long journey but worth it in the end? What are the questions asked in the phone interview? Im living in Wollongong, so how would I go about applying for the traineeship?

Hello boys (and girls??),

First time, first post.

This site is interesting... So much to learn.

Hope you're all well.

I've been to the cat1 medical for the trainee train driver yesterday. Not made females around... Hrm.. So yea, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Hello Taggy.
I've been a station staff for about a year now and you know what, it's awesome Smile You'll come across a lot of delinquents on the train and at the station - being a public facility. But that's a day in our office, and it's very rewarding when even just one person thanks/commends you for something.

I've also met a lot of gurads and drivers since I've started, I was trained at a major depot, and they all love their jobs. A lot of the guards and drivers have been in those roles for more than 10 years. And if you're not happy with being a guard, you can always move up or across Cityrail. So many jobs out there... Good luck!

I forgot to answer the rest of your questions, sorry.

I don't recall getting a phone interview when I went for the customer service role, nor when I applied for the trainee train driver. Just received an email regarding the info session and written assessment dates.

I remember getting a phone interview when I went for the trainee train planning role. And they asked about previous experiences, professional or personal, that would be relevant to the job I applied for. And I remember the lady asking about my Maths skills... that's probably where I flunked it, eh! Haha. Train planners write up timetables and special train notices so accuracy in numbers is paramount.

Also with traineeships, I think they have intakes twice a year? They advertise on the railcorp website. It's mostly trades, like Rail Traction and stuff, but when you're inside, you can apply for pretty much any job advertised internally.

I know this employee who made it as a guard at 18. He became a station duty manager at 22, and still loving it 10 years on.

Scary thing is, I think I may know the same person as you... Is this person based @ Mossvale out in the highlands by any chance?

They have apprenticeships aswell. There worth a go.. trust me Razz

I want to transfer to become a guard or station staff when the times right, but the hardest part is getting into the railways.

Just hope for the best.

Also, Welcome railchick enjoy Railpage Australia™... its nearly as fun as railcorp Razz

Cheers,
Kaine

Ahhh then I won't know him then, worth the try anyway...

Now... I patiently wait for RailCorp Recruitm'ts responce for my application for the CLK Casino Stn-based Customer Attendant's position (theirs 2 on offer)... These days & with the way my current workplace is goin' it's apply for anything & everything... As much as Casino is only a small town of 12 - 15'000, it's a foot in the door & I can always transfer back to Syd. later if a position became available...

Don't go in thinking you know what you is going on. You don't. You have no idea. So, Repeat after me in an german accent "I am Sargent Schultz. I know nothing."

http://www.youtube.com/v/ztgYhVFSDSQ

Just the first clip after the intro to Hogan Hero's in case your german accent is not so good.

Listen, learn, if you don't understand, ask. There is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid people who don't ask them. Last, but not, enjoy it. I did NSW all systems safeworking at SCRT and I learnt so much. It was fantastic. All those questions that you were afraid to ask to an employee, you will learn.

I'm coming to the end of my training, just take each day as it comes, dont get too involved in all the gossip as you will loose focus. It is a lot of fun, but you will be totally blown away by how much there is too learn and also to remember to pass your finals, but then you can forget most of it, well so I'm told.

Don't forget a thing and please don't take that attitude, because one day, you will need it when you least exspect it, trust me on this.

Actually another tips from one of the trainers at SCRT: "While you stay this side of a red signal, you get paid. (indicating on the board facing the signal). Once you go past this at red (indicating the signal), then you stop being paid and stay paying."
