Yes Wilfy you take things far too seriously old son, but when you have been promised something for over twenty or more years, you do start to wonder. Remember the 800/850 class cars were going to be for Adelaide's new electric train service way back in about 1943, so you can see that things get done at a much slower rate in the country town they call Adelaide!
All the polititians today are interested in is either their pay packets or how big a portion of beef stroganoff is dished out in the parliamentary cafeteria, so you can see we are fighting a very uphill battle. The worst of it is though the opposition is just as big in the slacking dept as the government, we just cannot win!

I think it's far more amusing that our Mall's got balls, not that long ago some overseas mates came to see them and were annoyed to find they'd been removed *for polishing*...
ahem, anyway.
What Wilfy does not understand is that SA has probably had MORE inquiries and Royal Commissions and Standing Committees on railways than (I'd wager) any other state. The grand result of all of them with the exception of Mr Webb arriving has been zilcho. |
Good Morning,
So do we need a New Webb era in south australia to take Railways into the 2030's.
If so it is important to get submissions in to the Parliamentary inquiry for Railways in South Australia.
In 15 Days the cut off for these submissions is going to happen.
If you want to see genuine change in the Railways of South Australia make sure you have done your submission before the 25th of October 2008.
Regards,
Brian Leedham.

Here is my submission to state railway inquiry, as per its limited terms of reference. As I suggested this extension to Dennis Hill and Nick Greer (family first).
Slightly altered version to remove my person details.

Philip Frensham has sent me a message to say the next Committee meeting is 29th of October, this Wednesday, and this submission is on the agenda for that meeting.

YES!!! Most definately so. And our own version of Dr Beeching, not to close lines this time but to kick some serious @#($ in the operating departments in both the government and the privately-run sections of our metro lines to stop wasting money on endless talk and get to it!

Possibly you could be right there Pressman, not to mention all the other red tape as well, as other government dept's decide to up the ante! You know enviromental issues etc, it could be years before you actually see something done. Oh god that is how it is now!

No need to worry about spelling and grammar there Aaron, you should see some letters etc from Parliamentarian's, some are just pathetic! The average primary school 5th grader could do better!

Not something I could avoid, have about 10 minutes to stick all the content together and email it. Was hard enough just typing up the important details like alterations to the map and the like.
Had the computer not repeatedly crash and run out of memory, I would have had more time to fix obvious mistakes. Its a printed html document, hence no inbuilt spell checker anyway.
ps: To your Aaron and countless others I've met in real life....
... If you find spelling mistakes and don't tell me where they are, I'm not going to find them am I ?
The last person I asked to check a document for errors not only didn't find any, but put some of their own in, I can't believe they get paid too.

My younger brother wrote a letter to the Attorney General (on an unrealted issue, asking a Q for school), and got a reply back from some bureaucrat in the department (who's job seems to be nothing but answering stuff that the Att-Gen should be answering!) and was noticible for its lack of content and was mostly composed of 'buzzwords' and weasel talk (thank you Dilbert for that fine term )
And to Pressman and Mr Peters: its not safe to jump straight into the pre-pre-meeting just like that! We'd better have a feasibly study first to check the relevance of having a preliminary pre-pre meeting first...
Theres entire government departments whose job it is to hold up the useful functions of others (I'm looking at you Firearms Department )

I gather your reply was something in the fashion.

Dear Colonel Klink,
Thank you for taking the time for your most recent posting. It is always a sincere pleasure to receive such valuable insight such as yours from members of the public.
In relation to your query, we wish to advise that we understand that it is an important issue to you and will be looked into as soon as practical. We do appreciate all input from all source, and look forward to being able to forward you a suitable reply.
The minister is also addressing other issues similar to yours, however it may be a while before we are able to give you a satisfactory answer. You can be assured that we are very interested in what you have said.
Perhaps, you'd be interested to know that we are changing the regulations under the act that you are referencing. To find out how, please check our website at www.department.gov.au.
If you have any further issues, this department is looking forward to provide you the high quality service that you have come expect.
Your Sincerely,
Some Minion.

This put through the politically correct and sensitive, potential vote grabbing PR faecal matter remove would translate to this:
| Quote: |
Dear Colonel Klink,
Why are you wasting your time contacting us. It is people like you who think they know better, and slow down the process of government.
In relation to your query, we wish to advise that we have lost your letter, especially as it is an important issue to you. We will not be making any attempt to find it again. You can't make an omelette without cracking a few eggs, and guess what, you are an egg. If there is someone who has a spare minute, we may redraft this letter to seem as though we have really taken an interest in your issue.
We are not going to bother waking the minster to read your letter, simply because no-one here is suitably qualified to handle a sleep-disturb minister as his personal assistant is currently on leave.
To further fob you off, perhaps we can distract you with other useless information that will assist us in revenue raising, and hopefully get you off our back. Perhaps, you'd be interested to know we will try and distract you with a very visually appealing website, but contain little or no information, and the information that it does contain, is only what we know can be obtained from elsewhere.
If you are still reading this far, then we do extend the invitation for you to write and email us again, or otherwise you may not vote for us again.
Yours Sincerely (clippy put this here)
The temp who has been hired to deal with your correspondence, but we have to make their title sound important.

Let's get something straight here, if you want something done then it is seldom wise to rubbish the people who have the ultimate power to make it happen.
Politicians do an incredibly hard job, generally, very well and for a remarkably cheap rate of pay. I am not a politician and would never become one, I do not think the state could afford me. A funny thing I have noticed is that (to not over exaggerate) tens of thousands of people complain about politicians, their pay and travel and the complainants always reckon they could do a better job. Yet when the elections roll around how many people nominate as a candidate? Maybe a few hundred... David have you ever nominated for a political position? Could you do the work? The answer I know is no to both questions.
Politicians in general are extremely well educated, unlike many of their constituents who complain about them, I very much doubt that ANY year 5 student could do better. Incidentally, you've been conned by the yanks, we almost never call our year levels grades...
I've not written a submission to a Parliamentary Board before, but I have written many other high level reports, and been involved at the assessment end of reports. I can tell you that having basic errors reduces your apparent credibility massively. You want to convey your point quickly, accurately and as concisely as possible, I struggle with the latter...
I am not going to highlight the errors in your report fabricator, but you might like to exchange met for meet in your second to last post, then there's my name...
Your report showed some thought, but I can promise you that you will not get a rail line built on the reservoir reserve, nor will you get it on Glenthorne.
I have some questions though.
I wonder why you would choose to follow an alignment that did not work 50 years ago and will not work now. I also wonder how you are going to double track a corridor built for single track without pissing people off, not to mention how you are not going to piss people off by installing the line back along *their* walking trail in the first place.
Does Reynella REALLY need two stations? I live close by and can tell you it's not that big a suburb or commercial zone for that matter... If you cannot walk from where the station was to the *commercial centre* then chances are you would be incapable of walking from your home to the station to catch the train in the first place.
Why this line get a 15 minute service? No other line has this, I have a 15 minute bus service ALL DAY, the train would have to at least match this or I will buy a car and drive.
Why do you discount the possibility of a bridge for the construction and upkeep costs yet conveniently forget to add the upkeep costs of a tunnel? My civil engie friends tell me there is probably not much in it these days, modern bridges are light and relatively maintenance free, not to mention cool looking too!
