I went past there on my way to work about 2pm the train was in front of the Yoogali club. I dont know what crossing it hit the car on as i didnt have time to stop and it had been cleaned up by then. as well as the club there are other small crossings in that area. The train was on the track and there was no sign of much damage. the boys where giving it a good look over.

It is interesting to read these comments and be bewildered by the wrong assumptions by these armchair critics.
For the record. The accident happened at a crossing at the exit of the yoogali club.
The young lady was a passenger in the vehicle. I believe the driver is ok.
I believe the young lady passed away this afternoon.
I am personally very saddened by this event, because I know her and she went through school with my children.
Its all very easy to be critical when you don't know the victims, but these people have families who will undoubtedly be devastated by this event.
As for the crossing:- There are stop signs at the crossing. Make your own assumptions about this. I think there is also a line of trees which would have obscured their view of the train.
As for the main intersection a couple of hundred meters up the road:- This intersection has taken many lives.
Locals have lobbied to have it made safe, to be ignored by the RTA.
I have heard that there is a demarcation dispute as to whether the council or the RTA are responsible for this intersection. But not sure whether this is true.
Meanwhile more people die in this area.
Any how this is my bit. Please show more compassion when contributing. Or at least get your facts a bit right before flying off onto tangents.

the best way the locals could lobby for a safer intersection is to pay attention when using it.
the road is only as dangerous as you make it

Jessiesdog, I appreciate the corrections offerred, and also offer my condolences.
As for attacking the "armchair critics", I will concede that the exact location of the acident was not specified in the report and most did assume it was on the public road. The reference to flashing lights, in the report, although far from conclusive, was probably a part of the reason for that.
The newspaper report, however, did (possibly incorrectly) identify the 17 year old woman as the driver, so criticising those that posted based on that belief may be uncalled for. Correcting them, of course, is not only appropriate but commendable.

The intersection in question is not at right angles. There are blind spots which do not become immediately obvious to those not in the know until it is too late.
Of course I assume that JT is a local and well aware of this.
We have plenty of other major intersections which do not have a high death toll.
So I can only assume that JT thinks that everybody else is stupid.
And of course, those who see the high number of fatalaties on this intersection are wrong.

Apologies Bwana.
The offence was taken from those making comments about 17 year olds being bad drivers. and generally what appeared to be expert opinions of those who have probably not been within 1000k of this area.
These assumptions are not always correct.
I think the whole thing is terribly sad.
I also feel deeply for the train driver. I think that something like this would be the worst experience one could have.
Regards
JD

This incerdent shows again that when there is a acident like this, as rail fans we should share information and facts but hold off putting our opinion till the facts come in.
