There was an exhibit at the 2007 Rail Expo in Sydney that display some kind of radio controlled level crossing. Was this the "Solaguard"? Googling for Solaguard doesn't seem to find much Exclamation

It is believed/hoped that the ARTC/Lockheed satellite based safeworking system would allow control of level crossing without the need for track circuits, which would be a definate cost advantage.

mmmmmmm Solar powered level crossings. What a great idea

I've seen them on the Leigh Creek coal line, ARTC Broken Hill line between Yunta and Cockburn, (I think they date back to when AN controlled these lines.)
Pitch Ritchi has at least two on their NG line.

Don't a few level crossings on the TAR also have this type of level crossing fitted? I know that a lot of the signals (point indicators) and things like point motors are also solar powered on the line.

The Tarcoola-Darwin line has a lot of solar powered gear, the loops at Illoquora & Newcastle Waters alsong with the level crossings at Plenty Highway & Warrego Road (north of Tennant Creek) are solar powered, possibly more.

Better late than never, but Solagard got a mention in Parliament on 20 June 2007 regarding the Duri Xing accident.

Maybe Solagard would work: painting the level crossing with a few tins of Dark Chartreuse High Gloss would make the truckie realise stopping is a good idea.

Solagard (not necessarily spelt exactly the same way) is IIRC a brand of sun screen lotion Exclamation Question
