In what will add sheen to the growth trajectory of the railways, the world is soon going to chug on made-in-India trains. Banking on the cost arbitrage, Bombardier Transportation India Ltd, part of Canada-based Bombardier Inc, is looking to manufacture indigenous trains for global markets in association with the Indian Railways. In a staged process, these trains will be made in the company’s upcoming manufacturing facility in Vadodara in a span of three to four years.
The first phase of this plan is the metro car project. Bombardier is also setting up an additional manufacturing facility in Savli, South Gujarat so as to supply Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd an additional 84 metro cars before Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Over 1.40 lakh sq ft of property has been acquired and the facility will have an initial investment of 30-35 million euros. This manufacturing facility will eventually supply other projects in the south-east Asia region. The construction work on the site has already begun and is expected to be operational by the last quarter of 2008.
The company had received order in March for an additional 84 metro cars from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (DMRC). The contract is valued at approximately 87 million euros.
Vadodara is home to Bombardier’s propulsion systems manufacturing facility and software development centre for signalling and traction applications in India and for other Bombardier Transportation projects around the globe.
The site at Maneja is ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certified. In Hyderabad, Infotech Enterprises operates one of the most important engineering centers sourcing key global projects for Bombardier

Pune, Oct. 9 Engineering goods manufacturer Siemens Ltd has set up a new, wholly-owned subsidiary company to tap the potential in the Indian rail transportation sector.
The move comes in the wake of Siemens acquiring land at Aurangabad to establish a facility to manufacture rolling stock, including coaches for trains and metros.
The recently formed Siemens Rolling Stock Pvt Ltd (SRSPL) is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Siemens Ltd handling the Rolling Stock business in India, the company confirmed in response to a query.
Elaborating upon the subject, Mr V.B. Parulekar, Director, Siemens Ltd and Head, Mobility Division in India said, “The rail transportation sector in India presents a huge business potential with many project plans being announced by the government. This offers interesting opportunities for Siemens.”
The company already has a significant presence in Aurangabad with three existing factories, including a new facility for instrument transformers that was recently inaugurated. “To address the growing business needs and market demands, we are actively looking at enhancing our capacities in various locations in India including at Aurangabad,” Mr Parulekar said.
Though Siemens did not give any more details, in July Business Line had reported the company’s intent to enter into this completely new business segment in India. According to sources, the first product to roll out under the aegis of SRSPL will be metro coaches. The greenfield factory at the Shendra industrial estate at Aurangabad is expected to involve an initial expenditure of Rs 500 crore and is expected to go on stream within a year’s time.

Indian Railways to compete for the tender, the two companies said in
a joint release.
"GE and BHEL along with Indian Railways intend to form a joint

US transportation and aviation major
Bombardier Inc.'s Indian arm inaugurated here
Wednesday India's first fully foreign-owned
railway coach manufacturing plant.
Bombardier Transportation India (BTI), a
subsidiary of Bombardier Inc, a Fortune 500
company, will manufacture coach shells and
bogies in the new factory here, an industrial
hub near Vadodara in the western India state
of Gujarat.
The new manufacturing facility here will be
the first large-scale rolling stock
and bogies manufacturing site in India that is
fully-owned by a foreign multinational
company.
Initially, the unit will manufacture 340 Movia
metro cars for the Delhi Metro Rail
Corporation (DMRC) and is also expected to
shape up as an engineering centre for its
global projects and for low-cost sourcing.
The value of Movia metro cars to be assembled
at the factory here is valued at 425 million
Euros ($590 million or Rs.23.6 billion) and
they will be delivered by 2010 so as to be in
operation well in time before the New Delhi
Commonwealth Games scheduled for October that
year.
