With the patronage growth will more than likely come additional regional services, and line extensions, with a forthcoming state election looming, expect a new can of worms to be opened, with rail becoming a hot topic due to high fuel prices, for both passenger & freight.

I would expect in the next six months a few announcements, feasibility studies and political grandstanding.

Ballarat to Maryborough will see a rail service , as there is not much cost associated with this service as the exsisting Ararat Services can have a vlocity detached at Ballarat - as the Armidale Moree Explorer does.

The Other corridor that most likely will be looked at is the Tocumwal - Cobram Scenario, where the exsisting equipment lays over at Shepparton, and at present the coach services are all full and require extra coaches on many occasions.

With the Albury service going to receive 5 rail services a day, the other regional outposts such as Bairnsdale , Echuca , and Warrnambool may gain an additional train service as well.

Kulwin to Ouyen shuttle using 160km/h V/Locity rollingstock. Connections to Mildura and Portland via W Class trams can be made at Ouyen.

Apart from the views being expressed by those familiar / intersted in expansion of RFT on the western side of Melbourne, does anyone know if there is likely to be a return of any passenger trains to Korrumburra / Leongatha. Or is this a permenantly dead train track, where petrol would have to get to $2.50 a litre before Lazarus gets revived here?????

Rail push continues for South Gippsland

The South Gippsland Transport Users Network says it will continue to lobby the Victorian Government on a train service for the region.

The Government announced earlier this year it would not be following through on its pledge to return trains to South Gippsland, and will instead focus on bus services.

Community feedback sessions will be held next week, in Koo Wee Rup, Leongatha, Wonthaggi and Yarram.

The Transport User Network's Max Semken says it does not make sense that the Government would not consider trains as a long-term solution.

"I believe if they're not going to bring their train back they should be increasing vastly the amount of bus services into Melbourne and wherever the services will be going to, either Pakenham or Cranbourne," he said.

"I'd like to know where the money went - there was $21.5 million all up, and where did the money go for the project?"

I wouldn't be holding my breath about the train service getting restored from Cranbourne to Nyora...

Ws? Shocked I thought Portland had the Cable trams.

Jokes aside I do support increasing passenger rail in regional areas.

Actually noone has said anything about the Healesville line. Or is that just going to be a tourist line.

Why not just propose every line that has been closed?

This is the way this thread is heading.

Search and find the thread that relates to the line that your proposing to revive, if it's to idiotic or bizarre, then there is a thread for that as well.

Couple of comments.....

The rise in fuel prices over the next number of years will almost certainly concentrate everybodys minds wonderfully.

The basic problem I see with any increase in destinations is lack of staff (drivers etc) and rolling stock. It appears what they have currently is barely surviving so little use in coming up with new services. Even extending Shepparton to Cobram would in reality require more as from my expeirence it is usually full before Seymour.

As has already been stated people very much prefer trains to busses. This has been well documented from when Kennet government suspended the train service between Albury and Seymour. (see Auditor generals report into public transport came out about 1998 1999)

And buses cost less to run, point?

Public transport is not some mindless game to try and carry the most people - any moves should be based on sound economic logic.

At a certain patronage level, trains do become more efficient to run, but until then, stick with coaches.

Passengers have also shown themselves to be more interested in service quantity rather than mode anyway.
