I understood that the Garrett isn't suitable for the Zig Zag's operations eg it is too high powered and can't be turned around on the Zig Zag's track.

Bring the 3900s back to Brisbane
Bring Karlsruhe Tramtrains to Australian cities
Extend the proposed Metro to Taylor Square
Extend the Gold Coast line to the Tweed

SO i undersyand from some reading on ZZ now that they have had the Garratt for some years. It has steamed and etc but never been run.. so why do they keep it stored if they cant run her yet?

Would be nice - something different to see if they can get it to run.

So how did the ZZ go from standard NSW gauge to short guage? Did they have to relay the whole track themselves in 1970s?
They could of held off for a while if they knew SG track operations would work.. They are unusual in only NG operators in NSW with running trains arent they?

There wasn't any track on the Zig Zag, when they started, so they could have chosen any gauge, or even dual gauge.

Narrow Guage has an advantage in that there are several systems to obtain rolling stock from:

QR
TGR
WAGR
SAR
CR

not counting overseas

and perhaps even some private lines.

Makes things more interesting.

IIRC, the Zig Zag closed shortly after the 'Ten Tunnels' deviation was completed (16 October 1910). The Zig Zag railway reopened as the Zig Zag Tourist Railway in 1975

Don't Make 'em like they used to

Bypassed by the 10 tunnels (ratholes) deviation in 1910 (RTM special in 07 was the first over Newnes extension since 1910). Of the original ZZ-bottom road is still used by the main line, whilst the other lines where completely removed.

ZZR has one item of NSW rollingstock which has been gauge converted, an IHO which I believed was our old ticket office at Mt. Sinai Halt.

The Garratt with proper restoration COULD run on the railway, the run-around facilities were, from what I have been told built around the Garratt to allow it to work on the railway, wouldn't be overly economical, but is still possible.

As has been said, we run QLD and SAR stock (3' 6") because when we tried to get NSW stock the answer was, "No". To put it simply, whilst QLD just said, "What do you want, how much, and when".

As for the end platform cars at State-Mine?, I'm not sure about that, but I know the Platform cars from our original opening are currently still with us at ZZR.

Hope that fills in some blanks and corrects some errors and backs up some truths.

Tom

The Garratt (402) has never been steamed at ZZR, there are pictures of it with smoke coming out of the funnel but that was from a rag that was lit and thrown into the smokebox for the photo shoot.

Please explain why on earth you would need to turn a 400 class garrat? Considering it has the same end for end running capabilities as any tank loco.

WELL, Why dont you explain to us who you are in the big scheme of thing and why your so confident that hunk of junk is not going?

Even's out the flange wear on the wheels. Usually done by a turntable or turning triangle.

3819 = 5810? Confused

Everybody has an oppinion. Thats what this place is for, to put forward your oppinion's. I am meerly asking why "3819" is so confident 402 will be staying at ZZR.

402 to Peterborough? over my dead body! No reason why we couldn't run it at ZZ, and if it does get LENT to P'b, there is not likely to be a suitable swap loco available.
