Hey........
was reading the Whittlesea local paper and the front page was covered with the future South Morang transport plan......
heres the link

i found interseting that they were considering extending the RMIT tram north to South Morang. I always thought this would be a good idea but i never thought they would actaully consider it.....
anyway
this plan is just council made
the only thing that i could possibly see happening in the future is the Mernda railway and all the road links and upgrades

And also
i read that the department of transport was considering 3 stations between epping and mernda. Surely Pindari, Plenty Valley, South Morang, Hawkestowe, Mernda and Masons Lanes couldn't be shortened down to three!

The tram extension from RMIT has always been envisioned (by Clowncil at least).

Not that I think it will ever pass South Morang (let alone reach it).

Under consideration would mean just that.

How many do you really need? In outer suburban sprawl area, walk-up patronage is negligible, the magority of passengers will arrive by bus and car. You don't need to repeat past mistakes by building stations servicing only suburban back streets (ie "Pindari").

Take a look at the station spacings on Perth's Joondalup Line for a good example.

If you look at the Melway, an extension to South Morang looks fairly easy and useful.

But in reality, on-street trams are so SLOW that you wouldn't want to take the run all the way to the city that way if there was any alternative.

If it met a heavy rail line anywhere closer than Bell that would be great - unload all the South Morang pax to take the train and then just provide a true tram service, for people who live near it and are going to Summerhill Village Shopping Centre which is just down the road.

You wouldn't comute to the city from South Morang via tram. You would take the train. However, people from Mernda could get off the train at South Morang and take a tram to RMIT, Brand juntion, LaTrobe Uni......People from Mill Park and Bundoora could take the tram to Plenty Valley town centre and all those other places i mentioned. The areas growing, the infrastructure needs to grow! It would be a great asset to the people of Plenty Valley

When I moved into Mill Park Lakes, I was told that the 86 tram would come up along The Lakes Blvd in the wide reservation that is next to it. The idea being that it would enhance sustainability through taking the tram to Plenty Valley Town Centre rather than drive if we wanted to go shopping or catch the train to Melbourne. Sadly yet another thing that will not happen here for 3000 years...

Yep........instead the median will become more lanes for The Lakes BVD....a road that could do without 4 lanes.

Exactly...the government and developers con you into believing you could possible get good public transport in your area......but if you take a good look you'll see why they won't.......
eg. has land acquistion even started from Caulfield-Dandenong........

No, the alignment was always for a divided dual lane road with central reservation for trams.
