Thought I would breath a bit of life back into this thread as I dropped past Clifton Hill today and noticed that the foundations for the new bridge have been poured. The southern most pylon is already around half the height of the old bridge and the street on the north bank of Merri Creek is now closed to road traffic so make sure you take a look at the progress if you're heading out to Hurstbridge.

Lots of work today, buses replacing trains between Clifton Hill and Bell on the Epping line, and between Clifton Hill and Heidelberg on the Hurstbridge line.
Plenty more to come.

IIRC, Clifton Hill has a third (middle) track through the station. If so, what is it for? Other stations such as Ringwood also had these third tracks.

It was for runarounds and/or local freight trains. Caulfield was the same, as was the ground-level camberwell. Oakleigh and IIRC Essendon also fit the category.
Clifton Hill is one of the last, and it's getting pulled out as part of the works (I saw a poster in the mainco depot at Flinders Street when I was on work experience).

Eliminates the low speed turnouts in and out of the Up Platform, perhaps?

The new track layout won't fit in with the centre track there, as there are some issues at the down end of it supposedly.

Why bother?
Just have four tracks from the junction to Jolimont, with Clifton Hill only an island platform serving the Hurstbridge line. Have six platforms at Victoria Park, with the extra two going to Doncaster. Then rebuild all the stations between Vic. Park and Jolimont to islands serving the Hursty/Doncaster tracks, with Jolimont having four platforms to serve that as well as the Whittlesea/Epping North lines.
This makes Vic. Park the only junction, rather than having two junctions one after the other. Therefore less infrastructure is neccesary, so everything gets cheaper.

Hey just asking.....
the other day on Saturday on a train that departed Heidelberg at 11am a woman was talking to me that got on the train and Westgarth and got off at Clifton Hill. She said she coming from the city intending to get onto the Epping line. She took at Hurstbridge line train thinking she would get off at Clifton Hill and change but for some reason the first stop after Jolimont was Westgarth. Is this normal...did it have something to do witht he works....was it a stuff up?

It’s more likely to be a stuff up, note all Hurstbridge train service will stop at Clifton Hill.

Clifton Hill is a compulsory stop. In addition, the home signals are never set to proceed until the train is ready to depart. It seems more likely that the woman didn't realise the train had stopped. Obviously without having been there I can't say with any authority however.

For down trains the signal for Epping line is automatic, but for Hurstbridge it's only when the train arrives is it set at proceed. Up trains have to stop because of the level crossing, but the signaller can set it at proceed before the train arrives and change the point via the centre track if necessary.
