Similar curiousity to other issues, what happened to the 58 class locos .. ??
They were built like 57 class and yet none of the 58 class survied the scrapping yards?
57 and 58 class were mainly long haul freight locos correct?
So could they ever run on a local inner city line or too heavy? If too heavy how could they run in country then with ease?

Well im asking arent i  because i dont full know the outcomes of the 58 class
I havent seen any photos of a surviving 58 class, unless someone else knows something i dont..
So did any surivive scrapping in any form or shape?

Dunno. I know that one or more 57 Class tenders (or their tanks) made it to the end of steam.
There are at least 2x 58 Class cabs and a 58 Class cylinder block remaining.

Possibly sounds very far fetched by since i have seen in UK as someone here pointed out, the "Tornado" restoration project, what would stop a ultra long term RTM plan to rebuild a new 58 class..
It wouldnt happen overnight but if planning and effort someone could with $1-m or so build a new 58 class for running order as a show of effort downunder.

What a great idea!
Tornado only cost them 3.5 million pounds, that's not mch over $10million.
The RTM should take note of this stuff, a new 58 is exactly what they need, in fact it could be the very project that welds NSW preservation into a united force...for good, not evil.

Tornado is a new build, not a restoration. The only restored parts on the loco are the assorted odds and ends like valve handles in the cab.

Firstly you can't rebuild something that doesn't exist anymore. That's what you call a "new build".
Secondly, it'd cost upwards of $4m. Who the hell is gonna fund that?
Thirdly, nobody cares about the 58 classes. Hell, there's already a 57 sitting around that nobody cares enough about to restore, what makes you think people would be inspired to build a new member of its bigger brother's class?
