That might be more useful as a full time 4am to 12am service to ease the pressure on the metro rail system than a night rider bus. Or even just peak time extra express buses.

another idea would be that trains would operate from Flinders street and Expensive Street (southern cross) to a transfer point (like sunshine for Melton Caroline Springs service) But Said Connectiing Buses would not leave until the connecting train has arrived

a few of them you listed could be Combined (again the Melton and Caroline Springs route)

That might be difficult on routes that run with A or Z class trams.

I have a good solution for Night Rider buses. How about actually running them on more than two days a week? Melbourne isn't only alive on Friday and Saturday nights.

For example, you have a bit of a go at Crown Casino and realise it's 11:40pm. You head down to Flinders Street or Southern Cross only to find that there's no more Lilydale or Belgrave trains running until 5am. You can get the last 109 tram as far as Box Hill, or the 75 to Vermont South, and then you're stuffed and if you live somewhere like Ringwood or further eastbound it's still going to be a massive taxi bill, or a massive walk if you're fit.

It's the same facing the other way too. Once the 11:36 (weeknight) Flinders Street service leaves Ringwood you can't go anywhere towards the city (for example Mitcham or Box Hill) without a car or a taxi. At the Lilydale end, the last train is gone before it even hits 11 on a Sunday night.

You cannot run from your own bunghole.

I agree that some tram routes should have all night services. The rollingstock is otherwise idle, and the overhead is live all night. However I would rather use A/Z class because in case of vandalism I wouldn't have any better trams to encounter it.

If you are going to do that, you might as well lock up the trams entirely to passengers and ask PN if they have any spare container flats you can couple up behind.

I think you've just solved the daytime overcrowding issue in one fell swoop!

True, we should make nightrider buses operating every night (morning) as the first step.

wasnt there an all night tram service from Melbourne University to Prahran or somewhere run by the Met back in the day?

i think it was called NightLink or something....

yeah.. i agree.. nightrider should run all night.

but try and convince bus operators to send their fleet and drivers out all night, every night, and bring them back in for normal operations the next morning..

its now a requirement that ALL nightrider buses be fitted with CCTV.. which means either retrofitting older buses with cameras, or sending out the new kids.

It wasn't a loop. It operated as route 99 from Melbourne University to Fitzroy via St Kilda. Operated via Swanston Street, Batman Avenue, Church Street, Chapel Street, Carlisle Street, The Esplanade, Fitzroy Street, Light Rail, Clarendon Street, Spencer Street, Collins Street, Macarthur Street, St Vincents Plaza, Brunswick Street, terminating at Fergie Street.

It was operated with A class trams.

Network broken into two, and also Batman Ave. had been ripped up.
