Hi

I prepared the "Australian Steam" website to help answer questions like the one that started this thread; the site lists locations & details of about 600 preserved steam locos in Australia. Hope it helps.

Hi Ed,

Just a few corrections for your webpage - which is quite good by the way.

1.) K159 is stored at MRPS. The locomotive at Hamilton is actually K177 (loco number stays with the frames - similar to a VIN chassis number on a car). There are AFAIK, no plans to number the locomotive at Hamilton to K159. I think the 'official' MRPS title given to this loco is "K193", although it is really 177.

2.) K174 is being restored as K177 at Mornington.

3.) K176 was never acquired by the SRHC for restoration. See www.srhc.org.au/forum for officially sanctioned information on K176's status.

4.) SCOA-P wheels have been acquired for J512. These wheels were stored at Newport until 2001 when they were transerred to Seymour. The wheels are currently with an outside contractor for conversion works. Again, see the above URL for more info.

5.) J539 is not fenced. It was fenced in the mid-1990's, but this was removed by mid 1998.

6.) There is only one spare C class boiler at Newport. This is now stored in Newport East Block and belongs to the ARHS-Vic. It had previously been in use elsewhere as an industrial stationary boiler. The boilers stored at the Taupalin Shop are mainly N class boilers, although there is a K and D3 boiler amongst them.

7.) D2 604 has a D3 tender tank with an added oil tank, fitted to an A2 tender frame. Not an A2 tank fitted to a D3 frame.

8.) D3 619 is stored pending at Bendigo Locomotive Depot. It has since been moved since your picture was taken.

9.) SRHC S class tender tank known as "301", has been re-united with an S class tender frame (QH wagon, QH1). Restoration work is yet to begin in ernest.

10.) The only parts of R700 returned to Newport were the wheels. This was to aid 766's conversion to standard gauge. The rest of the loco lays derelict in Ballarat East Loco Depot yard.

Hope this helps.

John Hurst's site is pretty good. I can't remember the URL though. Try doing a Borat (Google) search.

Isn't there also an S class tender tank at Ballarat East¿ They're eventually supposed to be turned into water carriers so steam locos can go a lot further without stopping for water, yeah¿

Although the question is months old; there was an S class tender at Ballarat East. This tender has since been donated to the ARHS Vic. Division, and is currently stored at East Block.
This was one of the later tenders made for the S class. Apparently the original welded tenders suffered from fatigue around the welded joints, so rivets were used for the new tender tanks. This tender tank also has a rounded bunker where the oil fuel tank was once located. I believe it too will one day be united with a former QH wagon to make a whole tender again.

It'll be good if they do as it would mean less watering stops. Plus chucking it behind Y 112 would give it a slightly larger range as well.
