Thanks for the feedback M636 .
Not exactly the same but in the automotive world to a reasonable degree manufacturing costs of vehicles is sort of proportional to the mass of the vehicle itself - not that it reflects in the RRP though !

The fact that the Evolution V12 weighs what 2000 odd Kg less than the FDL V16 means it obviously has less material in it . The fact that it surely has a lower component part count would make a significant difference in manufacturing costs .
Also it's quite possible that GE put some thought into manufacturing economics so it may be line ball if not cheaper than an FDL16 .
GE would have tooled up for volume production and if their sales pitch is lighter and dimensionally almost the same as an FDL it would be in their interests to promote the more modern unit .

Water to air heat exchangers are not a new concept and I'm sure United could come up with ways to package them it they thought about it - hmm -maybe in the sides of the long end if they moved the compressor forward (into the space occupied by the 16's extra 4 pots) and used the best available heat exchanger cores .

Yes all sorts of possibilities .

Will the 92 class operate just in NSW, or all over Australia?

At the moment it looks like the 92s will stay in the Hunter Valley.
They are all allocated to coal traffic, I understand.

ARG are buying eight for use in WA, but of course they won't be 92 class, probably V class.

CFCLA are expected to get some, but again, they won't be 92 class and might end up in the Hunter as well.

At work last night we got stopped to cross 1YN2 at Chullora Nth Fork to the suprise of me and the driver there was a 92 class frame around 15 wagons back from the locos.

For those interested 1YN2 NR93/NR103(PN)/NR106

Cheers, Michael

Nope , from the inside CFCLA , like NRC , wouldn't swallow the this is how they are built and no detailed alterations will be entered into .
CFCLA also voted with their feet . Inflexibility IS costing EDI sales .

CFCLA went in for 10 GE's and the option to buy up to three more batches of 10 .

Umm..

Aren't 92 class frames built in Taree and shipped to Broadmeadow?

Wouldn't YN2 be a long way around?

Could this be one of the SCT class (or EDI owned lease SCT class) frames being shipped from Port Augusta to Cardiff?

The frame we saw was the exact same as the one on XW4 a few months back.

This is clearly an EDI frame as used on the SCT class.
Since the SCT are all assembled, it must be an EDI lease unit (or one for another customer).

The "box" at the cab end is not present on a United frame.
It is a feature of EDI flexible cab mounting.
The frame does not have the integral fuel tank fitted on a 92 class.
