A sure place to get a shot of a DL leading (briefly) is to watch the arrival of the Indian Pacific in Sydney when it is running as a double consist.

A DL is always rostered as second unit facing towards Sydney and hauls the second class cars and part of the first class cars into (usually) Platform 3 after the leading NR has cut off. The NR then sets back and hauls the rest of the train into Platform 2.

So for about three minutes you can get shots of a DL leading the Indian Pacific. If the train is reasonably close to on-time the lighting is favourable.

Later the DL uncouples and couples to the second NR (facing away from Sydney) that has removed the car carrier and which will lead the return journey to Adelaide. Shots can be got of the DL trailing the two units moving forward to pick up the car carrier after reloading.

While not actually working, you can also get photos of DL class uncoupled at the former NR fuel point at Dynon or at Dry Creek. They are sometimes used as bankers in the Adelaide Hills and can be seen uncoupled at Tailem Bend.

I know DLs used to work as double units - saw a photo of a pair working in Sydney at the Illawara...that was in the Railway Digest in 2002.

I know in the Railway Digest April 2008 edition there was a shot of a DL at Adelaide hauling an extra PN intermodal train by itself (double stacked containers). The case of the DLs is probably the same as the ANs - these classes usually go as second units behind the main loco ie. NR.

Hi All,

I think that you'll find the only reason why DL's trail is to free up NR's for the head of other trains, It's kind of like 82's leading 81's, G's and GL's on Southern coal trains from western coal fields to Port Kembla and the Hunter coalies that have 82 class on the point. I love the 81 class and it wasn't that long ago that they were on the point of almost every mainline train in NSW, so their ride qualities couldn't be bad? Someone said earlier in the threat that the drivers should change the consist around, drivers don't really get a choice at what loco's lead a consist unless it's stipulated that a particular loco class should lead. I've locked heads with train controllers about this on broken down trains and they say that loco consists can't really be changed because thats how they are input into the computer. "What would we ever do without computers lol".

I think are seen as a hack and when rostered with an NR will usually take a back seat, I reckon they are pretty cool if a bit ugly. Are they related to the C sisters?

Hi Junction,

I reckon that they are the Australian F40PH with 12 wheels instead of 8. I was going to say that they look like a F40C till I looked up a picture of them. I guess the F40PH is the closest then?

I would guess that the DL class are not approved for DOO working, so where PN use only one driver ( say Kewdale - Port Augusta ) on most trains, a DL could not be rostered to lead.

I'd say cabs standards would be fairly poor compared to NR's so they wouldn't be allowed to lead outside Metro areas. There was at least one leading the Pirie ore train for a while a couple of years back.

Mate, if that loco pulls as hard as you do, it'd move anything.
I'd still rather have an ALCo.

Is it really true that there is DOO on the Nullarbor...................
