It wouldn't make sense for them to start on the ESR, as they will have problems and it'd be logical to start the trains on a quieter line.
Although Railcorp's 'logic' doesn't always seem logical

RailCorp have called tenders for the installation of 160 new/relocated guards indicators to suit having the guard in car 8 of an A-set. If such indicators appear on a particular line, then you know that A-sets will probably operate there.

Point of order - Railcorp will continue to exist until the applicable legislation has been passed by both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council and received the Royal Assent from Her Excellency the Governor.

Btw, does anyone yet know which number series they'll be given? From what I've been able to work out, off the top of my head, the '7' series is the only series not currently in use.
Which makes me think (and I'm probably rambling, as far as this is concerned!), why not number them 71xx, 72xx, 73xx, 74xx, 75xx, 76xx, 77xx, 78xx (where xx is the set number - 01 through 7 ? As they'll be permanently coupled, I thought it might be logical.

I'd expect that they'd be numbered in sequence with the Milleniums but with a new series for the trailer cars.

The main thing with cars 4 and 5 on the A-sets is not to have a cabin that goes from one side to the other thus blocking the flow of passengers from one end of the train to another. Given that the cars are 3000mm wide, you might have a 1000mm wide guards cabin in cars 4 and 5, leaving 2000mm (less width of walls) for passenger flow, albeit with a dogleg, and albeit with the guard and passengers mixing while the guard changes sides as the platform changes sides.

BTW, the original 1926 single-deck "Standard" Trailer car had a guards area that was not fully separated from the passenger area, and passengers could walk from car to car, while the guard walked from side to side to suit the platforms being on that side. |
Hi All,
I remember the power cars from standard H & M sets that only had a drivers cab in them and the cars were usually marshalled with guards compartments in the middle of of the trains with the driver only cars at the outer ends. I don't understand why the new PPP cars would need a drivers position in the middle, even for shunting? Suburban guards will be lost with operating the new PPP cars from the rear.

Someone raised the point in the first page of this thread asking what happens if a set needs re-marshalling etc.
It is my understanding that under the PPP the consortium must ensure x amount of trains are available at any time and will pay penalties if they can't meet that quota. I therefore would think that extra cars will be built to factor in any possible situations were cars may need to be taken off sets etc, with spares added in to ensure 8 car sets are available.

I think that you'll find that the research into these sets between the Iemma government and EDI is a no brainer, in other words, if one car in the set is defective, then the whole block is. I don't think it will be too long after they are built that a drivers cab will be added so the sets are dividable in the event that they can be run as 4 car blocks. I don't see why a drivers cab can't be added to the left side of the cars in the middle?
Skitube trains are built like it with an open area next to the driver, the old CPH rail motors had their drivers compartment in the middle of the car. How many passengers are going to take up the freedom of walking the full length of the train "except" school kids, thugs, druggies, Transits & the police? Oh yeah I forgot "fit gunzels" which I'm not one. lol

And then you'll need to add a Guards workstation to the right side so that when your middle cab becomes the rear of the train you'll need somewhere for the bellman to perform from. Or are you doing away with shim ?

Why not have a Drivers/Guards cab on one side, Guards cab on the other and public thoroughfare through the middle? They do it in England, and although it may look fugly, it serves its purpose:
