They have taken up your challenge, although it normally consists of travelling one station for a ribbon cutting followed by a rapid exit by car.

This link will be built and will be followed by the tunnel under Parkville. There's less resistance to the tunnel than there is to completing the ring road so it gets the go ahead.

The irony of it is that the Frankston Bypass will be the only bypass that has a toll meaning the residents of Frankston won't actually be able to afford to use it. Razz

Based on reports today, i reckon the toll road will be owned by a few Super Funds with Federal Government backing.

It is faster to go to Glenferrie from Malvern by two trains than the one tram, well in the peak at least.

Those living and working in Frankston would not need to use it. They might be grateful for having thousands of vehicles not wishing to stop in the area taken away from their overloaded road system however.

And if any tolling eventually generates funds for public transport - as it could - then I see nothing wrong in the motorist paying as they go. Public transport users have been accustomed to doing this for many years after all.

Whether you like it or not...Beastlink had to be built.
Along with many other freeways in Melbourne
after the bypass there will only be 2 missing links......
A line from Frankston to Ringwood would do absoloutely nothing if in the past of Eastlink...maybe under Springvale road it would do better. Still at the moment it is a waste.
If you want to improve public transport in that area you build a line to Knox, Rowville, Triplicate Ringwood/Dandenong and sparks down at Baxter. Still though, the Bypass and Eastlink would be needed for better cross town connections and for the people that need cars to get to work and other places. We need a great system with railways and freeways.....as much as it hurts

My new website on Melbourne and its public transport network coming sooonnn.

Guy on Airplane: Oh great, I always end up sitting next to a damn baby.
Stewie: What did you just say?
Lois: Stewie, stop fussing.
Stewie: Pipe down Lois. (Slaps guy on head.) Hey big man, turn around. Oh you can't hear me now. I was going to watch the movie, but forget it. For the next 5 hours, you're my smeg.

Anything that gets me to the golf course faster is a good thing. Eastlink does that. The bypass will be the cream.

Back to the topic of rail funding, this Fed gov splurge is a great chance to push the Epping duplication and South Morang extension. Best to have more public transport to get us through the coming depression. I can't wait for 0% official interest rates. (have a look at what's been happening in Japan since 1989 when their economy fell over after an asset boom).

Even at night it's faster, probably even faster if you walked from Malvern to Glenferrie! The speed those trams go on the route 72 is appalling. Doesn't matter if it's a Z1, a Z3 or a Combino it's 20km/h all the way to Gardiner, then up the hill, then 30km/h all the way to the city, being overtaken by cars, taxis and buses all around. Even at 11:17 at night (from the top of Camberwell) with hardly any vehicles on the road it's still slow as always, unlike the bumpy Citadii along the 109 which can hit 65km/h in some places. The only time a 72 tram went as a decent speed for me is when it was called defective. Driver essentially floored(?) the Combino all the way from Gardiner station to Glenferrie Rd and pointed us to a waiting Z1. It's a good long trip if you want to waste a bit of time when you're going to the city though.
