remove the spring from the pony truck and you will have all the pulling power you need.
p.s that is the quickest solution by far.

SS,

I am doing that to my Eureka AD60. Have you found that you need to weight the "pony trucks" to keep them on the tracks after you removed the springs?

The Austrians 36 can be easily modified to haul more than prototype loads up prototype grades . Simply remove about 4 coils from the spring on the leading bogie. If you want maximum tractive effort totally remove the spring. If you remove the spring you need to get a short length of K&S brass tube, and drill out the hole in the brass tube to match the screw that holds the bogie in place. This modification reduces the excessive forward and back movement in the bogie which is not noticed if you use the spring. You will find that if you remove the spring the maximum speed you can go through coarse standard RTR frogs is not much more than a scale 70mph. I often see spring modified Austrians 36's haul at least 7 bogie passenger carriages up a 1 in 50 grade on the NSW AMRA layout. No need for metal boilers for H0 models. For example I have been able to double the tractive effort of my Eureka 60 class by placing all the boiler weight on the driving wheels, though this is not a easy modification. No extra mass was added to the model. Under test it was able to pull in excess of 20 Auscision 100 ton hoppers up a 1 in 50 grade, that's about double the prototype load. With good design any plastic boilered H0 model will be able to haul prototype loads up prototype grades.

I'm sure he reads it alright (like I'm sure all of them do), just doesn't post anything. It's just another means of keeping their ears to the ground, albeit a bit skewed and emotional at times (myself included).

Apologies for bringing up an old thread.

I want to fit a knuckle to the front of a 36. Does anyone have tip or tricks (full blown instructions) in fitting one? Any pictures?

ok here ya go, i used (all kadee part numbers) 156 All Metal Coupler Center-Set -Long Shank 25/64 couplers, in 252 boxes (they clip togther and are easier than the 30 series boxes to install) with the end of the box filed down slightly and 256 plastic screws with the hole drilled and tapped out using a 2-56 drill and tap set, dubro part number dubro 360(if you look closely at the 2nd photo i havent trimmed the screw back yet)

The cut out in the buffer beam was done with a dremel tool cut of wheel, the loco makes it around AMRA's HO layout no problems with another pig on the front. If your curves are tighter than this you might need to make the gap wider. I have also used this method on a DJH 38 aswell.

Bloody brilliant! Thanks for that supersix.

As fate would have it, I bought a 2-56 drill and tap set for the hell of it the other day too.

I agree with Albert well done Super Six, I am now going to have a go at it myself. I have already converted my 3 36ers to tender pickup, the superior preformance in operation that results makes this converstion well worth the effort.

Thanks heaps for that supersix. You have given me a great method of fitting a KD to the front of my 36. I will need this for double heading with my 35 and 32(when I get it), ( and not to forget the 38 EVENTUALLY)
