This is my version of the Victorian Transport Plan (focusing soley on rail transport)

• Extend and Duplicate the Epping Line to Mernda along the old Whittlesea Railway Line reservation with  new stations at Mill Park, South Morang and Mernda. Frequent shuttle buses will run from Doreen to Mernda Station. Less frequent shuttle buses will run from Whittlesea and the rest of the rail reservation will not be sold off to allow for future extensions subject to development.

• Duplicate the whole Cranbourne Line and extend it to Casey Fields with a station in between at Cranbourne East.

• Triplicate as much of the Dandenong line as possible.

• Electrify the Sunbury Line and construct a station at the Calder Park Raceway.

• Electrify the Melton Line and construct a new “Park and Ride” station at Caroline Springs.

• Construct new stations at Lakeside on the Pakenham Line, Lynbrook on the Cranbourne Line, Coolaroo and Patulous on the Craigieburn Line, Southland on the Frankston Line and Point Cook on the Werribee Line

• Have the Upfield line run through to the new Roxburgh Park Station.

• Electrify and duplicate the Frankston Line to Baxter. The Stony Point shuttle service will now terminate at Baxter. Duplicate parts of the Stony Point line to allow for overtaking and increase in future services. Reopen Langwarrin station. Leawarra and Langwarrin will both have two platforms.

• Reopen the Mornington line as a shuttle service to Baxter like the Stony Point line. Baxter station will undergo a large upgrade and will have 3 Platforms (City services, Mornington and Stony Point.)

• Construct a Western Loop railway line from Werribee to Laverton with stations at Werribee Racecourse, Wyndham Vale, Manor Lakes, Tarneit and Hoppers Crossing North.

• Reopen the Healesville Railway as a Greater Melbourne Shuttle, similar to the current Stony Point Service. Trains would terminate at Lilydale Railway Station.

• Reopen Queenscliff line to run shuttle services to Geelong.

• Extend Warrnambool line to Port Fairy.

• Extend Ararat line to Portland via Hamilton, and have shuttle services operating between Heywood and Mount Gambier (SA).

• Reopen the Mildura line.

• Reopen services to Leongatha and Wonthaggi.

• Extend Bairnsdale Line to Orbost.

• Reopen the Mansfield line

Why is it that everyone suggests opening new lines at huge expense through the middle of open countryside, but no-one every suggests thing like having a train more than every two hours on the eastern line on weekends, or more than 3 trains a day to Sale or Colac, or more than two trains a day to Shepparton, or...

Isn't there a Lakeside on the NG Gembrook line?  It will cause ticket machines to go bezerk if there are two Lakesides!

The ticket machines won't have tourist railways programmed in so it won't matter. The government is leaning towards "Cardinia Road" as the name for the new station anyway. It is quite a nice photo spot BTW...

Because none of those would result in a new line to foam over. Running some more V/Los to Traralgon might get the response of "blah" from the gunzel community.

Of course, those kind of things would provide much greater benefit, and at much less cost than re-opening/building some branch line for two or three Sprinters a day.

If you go for a drive along the Princes Highway in the Pakenham/Officer area, there's also still a couple of spots where it is possible to get a side-on shot of an entire 6-car spark Smile

Hi Marcus,
We have three trains a day to Shepparton on weekdays, and five services if you count bus/train connections with an additional bus on Friday evenings.  Weekends only have two rail services. Sunday gets an additional bus service via Puckapunyal.

The one thing that annoys me most with Melbourne train systems the use of stupid names. Southern Cross is a prime example. By naming it Southern Cross, it tells us that it is in the Southern Hemisphere nothing more. Spencer street tells everyone that its in Spencer street.

With Lakeside in Pakenham, It should be called Lakeside or Lakeside Pakenham. The Lakeside on the Puffing Billy will have no affect on it whatsoever. If anything that lakeside should be renamed Emerald Lake.

Cardinia Road isn't what you would call a well recognised street however wouldn't be the worst name going round.

And what is with this Williams Landing business, Point Cook ok. Its in Point Cook so it should be called Point Cook.

The REAL Point Cook is miles away from the proposed station  of that name. Williams Landing is RAAF Williams base alongside the former landing ground and not far from the old "Drome Loop" when the Geelong line was single.

The bit of line from Sydenham to Sunbury is flat and boring, with few points to get trackside for photos. It does't get many good short workings either, mainly railcars.

That's the good thing about the VTP, more A and P classes running through the Parwan Curves, while Sunbury cops sparks. Twisted Evil

I would be happy to lose V/Line InterCity services if the government subsidy went into rail freight, especially short ones running in daylight. 8)

does anybody know where a proposed caroline springs station would be. as it is the melton line in the vicinity of caroline springs is situated alongside the deer park industrial area and after that there's the now half finished deer park bypass

The 2007 Melway has it directly south, at the end of Christies Road (extension of Caroline Springs Drive) where the Boral Quarry siding heads south.

Whilst this may not really have much to do with the above, my $2.20 would be...

Either A) Have the proposed Cross City Rail tunnel surface at Sunshine, not Footscray.

All Melton electrics/Sydnam trains will enter the tunnel, stations built nearish to the surface stations (Middle Footscray, etc).

The current tracks which hold the Watergardens trains now should be converted to a higher speed line for Bendigo/Ballarat V/Locity services.

B

Go by the government's plan to have the cross city tunnel surface near Footscray, but find space (Laughing ) to have a 3rd track which will be dedicated to V/Locity services.

PM peak trains to Ballarat will use the line, while trains coming in will use the UP suburban line, and vise-versa for AM peak.

This is VERY wishful thinking, but all one needs to do is go on a V/Locity from Ballarat to Melbourne and see why it needs to be done.   Once you hit Sunshine, its a crawl all the way to SXS.

[/end wishful thinking]

This is my version of the Victorian Transport Plan (focusing soley on rail transport)

• Reopen services to Leongatha and Wonthaggi.

++South Gippsland would be best served by reopening the SG line to Lang Lang (allowing high speed running on the flat track) and constructing an intermodal there to serve the Leongatha & Wonthaggi areas.

• Extend Bairnsdale Line to Orbost.

++What justification would there be in reopening this line with its comparatively low freight movement and the astronomically high cost of rebuilding it - including all those big bridges?

• Reopen the Mansfield line

++Whilst this one is a sentimental favorite (and I travelled there on the last steam pass in 1977), this line also has minimal freight opportunities and is not suited to passenger running to Melbourne because of the circuitous route.

I would also like to see the RFR corridors altered so the long distance trains run mostly express from the terminal centres and the smaller commuter towns (eg the Drouin-Pakenham corridor) be given dedicated services of their own. It doesn't make sense for RFR trains to be slowed down for very small numbers of pax in the really small stops.

Also, I would like to see provision made for new passing loops on routes where freight services still operate - probably Bairnsdale & Warrnambool are the obvious choices as Ballarat & Bendigo don't have freight.

Firstly, I'm sure you mean governments. You know plural because there has been more than one.

Secondly, because more then half of it was useless and running at an extreme loss?

I blame the mentality that everything must return a profit. With the growth of the motor vehicle, and the truck, demand was progressively shifted from rail to road, particularly where under performing lines we predominant.

Of course, in the past 3 years, we have seen a renaissance in the return of rail, but reality is, it needs to be attractive to the user.

If you can travel in a car at 110km/h for $60 or a train and 80km/h for $30, allowing a distance of 320km, and being a necessary journey, which would you take? Your average Joe would probably in the car for an hour less.

This plan opens and extends numerous lines throughout Melbourne and victoria but barely does anything to expand inner city capacity and conflicts. Particularly the suburban lines having to merge and share the same congested tracks with one another.

For my zone 2's worth, i can see a lot of validity in the originators suggestions apart from the last 7points.
Triplicating the Caulfield Dandenong corridor is the key even though some stations need grade separation. Theres a few that should have a Laburnum (ie no centre platform cos peak services wont / shouldn't be stopping there!).
Damn - you could run the Pakenham line like the Belgrave / Lilydale. That would be a good improvement. But it all costs money etc etc....
For the benefit of an idiot - this tunnel proposed from Footscray to Caulfield..... who travels from Caulfield to Footscray???
Did someone survey commuters on trains thru Caulfield to suggest this. If it is a good idea, would South Yarra have been a better spot to take in the Sandringham line as well (or is a stop intended there in the tunnel).....
