I and a few other people are trying to put together a comprehensive list of closed lines and stations in Melbourne. It's up here. A lot of things like dates and locations are missing; but if anyone has a look and points out any errors or makes some additions, that'd be great, seeing as there's a whole untapped source of knowledge about these kind of things on this forum.

(If you're wondering, the page is part of Wikipedia, an open-source encyclopedia. Anyone can add to it, so feel free to modify the list. Check out the links in my sig for other Melbourne-related pages that could do with more information, including more on railways and tramways).

I've just had a quick look. Something that hit me immediately was the description of the Outer Circle, listed as closed in 1895 and 1927, as a "diesel operated". Likewise, I doubt whether the Red Hill line would ever have seen a diesel, closing as it did in 1953.

The northernmost part of the Outer Circle (Fairfield - East Kew) closed in 1893 , part of this section was later re-used as the APM spur. While the pass service to Deepdene closed in 1927 as stated, freight continued East Camberwell - East Kew until the mid 1940s.

This aside, a very interesting list - has answered a lot of questions for me!

Re the Kew Line: It closed for passenger services in 1952 but continued to operate a goods service until the line closed in 1957.

A very interesting list!

The Wikipedia does look a suitable place for a lot of us reasonably knowlegable railway archaeologists to contribute something of our collections of information we have all aquired. The list of closed lines and stations is of course sketchy and by its apparent layout appears designed to be so. There is the abillity for anybody to add information to the Wikipedia and I wrote a quick scetchy history of Wodonga railway station which was added to the Victorian stations list. There appeared to be so little information on that subject that I had to add something, there looks to be an opportunity for you to do something with your encyclopedic railway knowlege there dutton bay.

The last operations on the Red Hill line were Walker diesel railcars operating to Balnarring to take visitors to the Somers Camp, so that is correct. The thing to do is to add corrective information to the Wikepedia rather than quibble about details here.

If anyone wants some extra work to do Wink besides that list, there are a few others: List of Melbourne railway stations, List of regional railway stations in Victoria, List of proposed Melbourne railway stations. There are also links to each of the current lines on the first list (such as the City Loop), and the regional lines on the second list, none of which have any articles yet. The articles for the currently open stations are mostly fairly empty as well. If you could for example, describe the layout of your local station at its article, that would be great.

And don't think all this applies only to Melbourne: there are other cities networks listed here: Transportation in Australia

Oh, and the list of closed stations isn't designed to be sketchy, even though it is. The idea is to eventually have seperate articles for each of the lines and stations, as a few already do have (quite decent) articles.

I will add to my Wikipedia page about Wodonga station as well as writing summaries of activities at stations around my area. Corowa, Wahgunyah, Yarrawonga and Cobram spring to mind as railway stations I could at least write something about regarding their present status and at least some history, although it all must be at least a little sketchy because my knowlege cannot be comprehensive without a lot of research which I cannot be bothered doing. Present information outside Melbourne is non existant so even brief sketchy info would be a great improvement.

Thanks for any help you can give, Rodo.

Does anyone here have a full list of the stations on the Rosstown line? With those, I think we'll have a complete list.

The other big hole at the moment is with locations - we're missing information on just about every station that closed before the 1960s (the edition 1 Melways solved all the ones after that). Any help with filling in these would be particularly appreciated.

I realise this is mainly about suburban melbourne lines, but thought it worth a mention anyway. On the Geelong - Warrnambool line there's an abandoned platform area at Breakwater (marked in the 1986 Melways I've got as the Geelong Racecourse Platform). I've never known of it being used. Thought I may have seen another old one near the Showgrounds (Showgrounds Stop, I think) though could have just got the two mixed up. Also out at Marshall there is a station street running along the train line, is it safe to assume there must have been something there once.

Yes, the new Marshall station is built on the site of the former Marshall station.

The Geelong Racecourse platform is not the original one. There used to be a branch to the former Geelong racecourse. I think that this was somewhere east or southeast of Marshall.

I just had a look at the site and noticed the the railway between Elsternwick and Oakleigh (which saw only one train) does not get a guernsey. Whether there were any stations on this line is something I don't know.

EDIT: Oops! Embarassed I didn't realise it was called the Rosstown Railway. Courtesy of Google, I found an interesting brochure from Glen Eira Council which can be viewed by clicking here. Be warned, it's in pdf format and takes forever to download for those us on dialup. It seems there were at least three stations on the line named Garden Vale, Hawthorn Road(?) and Sugar Works(?).

I'm not crazy, M'Lynn, I've just been in a very bad mood for 40 years!
