Metro Trains Melbourne Trainee Train Driver Recruitment

  Ruskiboy Station Staff

Hey guys this is my first post and as you can see from the title it's about recruitment.

I'm not sure if I'm ment to post here or in another part of the forum if I'm in the wrong spot please feel free to delete as I've not worked out how to do it yet.

Now before you guys point out that there is a search feature on here and similar questions have been asked I'm aware of that but I figured that since Connex no longer exists and the process may have changed a new thread is in order?

I'm trying to become a Trainee Train Driver. I've already done the online psychometric tests and passed and got the email saying I'm on the merit list and recently I've gotten an email confirming that I've been invited to the December 19th Assessment Centre which I'm happy about but at the same time I'm nervous as hell as this is my dream job (as corny as that sounds).

I was just wondering if people could give me some advice on what to expect on the day?

How are the tests? What level of difficulty are they?

What preparation is required? What psychometric practice tests should I take? (links would be appreciated)

What kind of questions do they ask you and your references?

How long does it take to find out after the assessment centre if you got a job offer?

Any other information or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks guys.

19th December ??

The tests will be almost the same as what you did online. Interview was straight forward. It takes a couple of weeks to find out whether your successful.
There are some more details posted in the employment section under "connex trainee's"

Well I applied for the role back in 25/5/09 and have been on the merit list for some time.

I had received the emails about the assessment centres but had pretty much given up hope of getting into one by the start of Jan but to my surprise 3 days ago I got confirmation of getting into the last centre on the 19th of Jan  Very Happy

Could someone please tell me what tests they do?

Is there any spelling/grammer and is the maths hard?

You could start by learning to spell grammar

*Facepalm* That one was a pure slip of the key though I'm not that bad  Laughing

I'm currently practicing using these http://www.psychometric-success.com/downloads/download-practice-tests.htm

Just hope they are enough.

The last question I forgot to ask *sorry* was if by some miracle I pass and get selected to go into training are the tasks and assessments done in handwritten form or can they be typed?

I suffer from Dysgraphia and even though I was told it's ok to apply for the job with this I'm not sure how they will let me (if they will let me) submit assessments with this.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick question the testing period – has there been one since mid-2009?  From what I understand, they were advertised bi-annually for a period of two weeks, and you could only apply and do the online tests when they advertised, but I'm not sure what’s happening now that Metro has taken over.

TIA from a first time poster  Smile

The actual testing policy and procedure has not changed it's still the same company running the testing and recruitment (careers focus)

Just noticed a bit of a failure in the assessment centre information pack.

This is a quote from the Primary Objections. See if you can spot the copy and paste.

"Provide an efficient service to Metro Trains Melbourne customers by ensuring that the safety, courtesy, information and assistance provided is of a high quality and in accordance with Connex Melbourne’s objectives and policies."

Thanks for that, and for all your posts in this thread – I hope to follow in your footsteps Smile

The old Connex site used to link to them, but the new Metro one doesn't, so I didn't know where to look and my searches proved fruitless.  They say:

We anticipate recruiting for this position in early 2010.

Well that would be because they do only one recruitment at any one time since the last assessment centre is on the 19th of this month it would probably mean that they wont even be advertising for postions for until maybe 3 months after that and the first to get on the merit list will most likely find out about at least a month after that.
