Deer Park works

I see there is resurfacing work and new lighting at Deer Park, is there plans to build a new building/shelter on the platform?

Last time I was out there, I was heading to Rockbank at like 6:30 in the morning and I noticed they were re-doing the carpark -- This was probably in March or February?

The station has(had?) a gravel platform so they're probably fixing that up.

Looks like there wont be a new station building built any time soon. If the station is being used more and more, perhaps it should be staffed during peak hours.

I've used it a few times before the upgrade. It wasn't the most friendly station. Gravel platform, very few lights, and a gravel car park as well. Right now it is looking so much better than what it was.

Don't think I've ever used them other than when I was out there during the day - They've never really been particularly safe feeling stations. They have a very 1980s Regional 'Middle-of-Nowhere" feel, regardless of the fact they have housing estates almost next to them.

Deer Park definitely deserves this upgrade - It's got houses backing onto it now so it should be much better lit to deter loitering of unsavory characters, provide a safer waiting area for passengers who do use the station and more covered areas for passengers -- It's obviously not a station which they expect large numbers of passengers to wait in the morning for their train and I have noticed around 6:45am'ish, There are 40+ people waiting for the city bound train.

Ultimately it's still a V/Line station and I don't know if V/Line or DoT have any plans to upgrade this station, I imagine under RRL they might do another upgrade to staffed (V/Line Premium or Premium) but that's still a few years off.

On my visit yesterday new lighting was installed, the PA system was under test and what looks like plumbing for a new shelter/building next to the current bus shelter was in place. The platform is ready for resurfacing and most of the carpark is done.

Are you in the area often? Can you keep an ear open for Auto announcements? I know they definetly don't do them at Ardeer or Rockbank - However I do know that they can make manual announcements (I'm not sure which station controls them, I think It'd be Melton or perhaps Sunshine)

Could you grab some photos if you get a chance? I don't often end up in that area.

True. Not that many places left with that "forgotten wayside station" feel to them!

(At one stage when the patronage was much lower in the 1990s half the unmanned places in the suburban system might have fallen in that category)

Here are some images from yesterday, note the piping sticking out of the ground - for drainage?

Thanks, Looks like it'll be well lit Smile

Pipe could be anything, Drainage, Conduit (Could be a Vending machine, A Shelter with lights, electric clock, all of the above?) or any number of other things.

Was there ever a building at Deer Park? Any historical photos about?

Lets say the single larger pipes are for downpipes, the smaller ones are obviously electrical/data. Then the drain pipes mark corners of whatever building they are putting in, which is huge. The light poles avoid this area as well, which makes sense.

The only question is if its just a huge roof with some seats underneath, or something more useful. You'll have to figure that out when they start pouring concrete.

The value of the lighting looks greater than the sum total value of the downtrodden windswept place .

Apart from some sort of Rolls Royce bus shelter neither VLP or Government would be wise to spend too much money on the joint until RRL goes through as it might well all have to be moved from the current alignment . The time that both Ardeer and Deer Park will get some decent facilities is when electrification to Melton goes ahead  , hopefully in the short term after  Sunbury is done .

Good to see a bit of work at Deer Park, return home on the footy trains late on Friday nights I offen think the people must be made to get off there (and Ardeer & Rockbank too). With the growth of the Western side these stations may become quite busy.

Mmmm, spin

Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky said Deer Park station which is served by frequent V/Line services was growing in popularity with commuters and would be improved to bring it to the standard of other suburban train stations.

Like every second train most of the time, or a train once every two hours

“This is a massive boost for Deer Park passengers and these improvements will be a real and measurable sign of the Brumby Government’s commitment to improving rail services and facilities right around Victoria.”

If they wanted to give an actual "massive boost" to people at Deer Park they could try stopping a train there more than once every two hours

The 'increased passengers' would be peak hours mainly because of new housing developments in the area and Caroline Springs for which it is the nearest train, if you worked 9-5 in the CBD the service would be okay if you drived to there

I don't know how many times I've written about posters who think the current T/T is the T/T we will have for the rest of their days Exclamation

For the unitiated, T/T's are always a work in progress and the frequency of trains that stop at Deer park will only increase over time.

As long as my express doesn't stop there ExclamationWink

They take forever to get changed.. you just inspired me to make a thread whinging about my awful Sunday night frequency, which should have been fixed when the other lines were almost a decade ago. Frequency improvements are not fast!

I think if the peak expresses stopped at North Melbourne (u), Ardeer, Deer Park, Ballan (not for all trains) and Ballarat only, it could help increase patronage at those stations by giving them true expresses  ExclamationIdea

The problem is......, You have the plebs out in Caroline Springs (If the Melton Leader is anything to go by), belly aching for a station Caroline Springs, when Deer Park does not have much in the way of Patronage.

My response is that how about they just drive down to Deer Park, Show that there is Patronage, and when THAT gets overcrowded.., they will then think about a station for Caroline Springs.  Merely crying over a station for Caroline Springs, when Deer Park is JUST down the road, is futile.

Let me keep my Peak Expresses that skip Ardeer, Deer Park and Rockbank.

Show there is INTEREST in Public Transport first, before DEMANDING a station, when Deer Park is not showing the demand for it.

Why would anyone accept Deer Park frequency when they could drive a bit further to Albion? Or why not drive the entire way in hey!!

......and pay at least $15.00 a day to park ones car, not to mention running costs, Co2 emissions, wear and tear....on the driver Exclamation

Makes a Zone 2 ticket, and a little T/T planning seem a real bargain.

I use that logic with Marshall if I cannot be certain I'll be on the 4:55 back. I drive up to North Geelong and park, and by the time I get there sometimes I do say "f--k it, I'll drive today, it only works out to be an extra $6 or so". However, unlike Deer Park to Albion, traffic generally flows well throughout Geelong all the way to Laverton, where it becomes a carpark.

Do you have to pay for parking at Albion, or any other non-CBD station?
