Hello dear friends,

I want to introduce my freeware layout design program SCARM, which you can download and test from the official website (http://www.scarm.info).
I will appreciate any comments concerning SCARM here or by e-mail scarm at scarm dot info.
I was not sure where to post this topic, so I do it here - please excuse me if this is not the correct place or if I'm violating some of the forum rules.

Actually it works if you knock the full stop off the end.

Thank you, hanovale, for the corrected link. I don’t know why the dot at the end is also included.  Embarassed

I had a quick play with it this morning.

On the surface it looks good, and functions well, and I will certainly be using this as my preferred design software for my upcoming layout. I prefer it over the Altas equivalent.

I think the most valuable aspect for me is the 3D feature which gives good visual representation of your work as you progress through the design. This is what has attracted me to the program.

Some points to note: I cannot get the "Tunnel" feature to work thus far and the flexitrack feature is a bit fiddly to get right, however I've had a total of about 1 hour to use it, so I'm a bit rusty. I'm sure with a bit of practice and more reading of the instructions it will fall into place.

I cannot seem to find any turntables in the libraries.

It seems an OK software, I don't know who reported the post though

Thank you, guys Smile

@GY3451: Yes, there are no turntables yet, but I will work to include them in some of the next versions of SCARM. Tunnels are shown only in 2D for now, but I am working over terrain rendering in 3D and when it is ready, the tunnels will appear also in 3D. About flex-tracks – I thing that flex-track laying in SCARM is closest to the reality, but any other ideas are welcome. See also the following clips for flex-tracks modelling and connecting:

Thanks Mixy. Please do not take my post as any sort of critical review. Very Happy  I was quite excited to see a new product on the market, and it has come at a timely point because I am starting to design a new layout soon.

I am sure there may be some small technical issues and "bugs" as the software evolves but you seem to have it almost there.

I'll PM you.

Don’t worry, GY3451,

It is just what I want Smile
All remarks, questions and even critics are welcome – this is the only way to make SCARM better. Together Wink

In future, will there be a function to design custom radius/angle turnouts for those of us who plan to use hand laid track and turnouts?

Is there a Linux version ? Smile

Hello again Smile

@NSWRTM123: Yes, there will be such feature in some of the next versions. But you can make your own tracks in SCARM even now, by modifying of library files. They are simple text files, that can be opened with Notepad. For parameter descriptions, see the sample library http://www.scarm.info/temp/BTTB-TT.lib, where all parameters are described in the comments.

@Shazam75: No, there are no Linux or Mac versions for now.

Any chance of a future update being able to handle multiple baseboards, such as for Modular layouts?

Hello Draffa,

Yes, such functionality will appear in some of the next versions of SCARM, but I am not able to tell when.

Now I am working over turntables. Actually, handling of them is almost ready and after some testing, turntables will be introduced in the next version of SCARM. Which will be released soon Smile

Hello again,

The new version 0.8.0 of SCARM is ready Smile

Most important new features are standalone installer, support for turntables and baseboard editing. There are also many corrected and updated libraries, due to some errors like doubled track names, doubled item numbers and some new parts. If you are using a turntable that is missing from SCARM library files, let me know and I will add it in the next update.

Well done Mixy, the new installer works a treat! Overall this program is so simple to use, and is my model rail design program of choice.

Well done.

can you be a bit more descriptive, please? I've been using SCARM since Mixy release it and have had not one issue, so I might be able to help you.

What stage are you getting to?

1. Firstly, are you installing the new version 0.8.0?

2. Are you able to place your first track on the workspace?

3. Are you able to join tracks together?

Hello again Smile

The new version 0.8.6 of SCARM is ready Smile

The most important new feature is automatic 3D terrain generation. It will allow realistic 3D representation of the layouts, which have defined heights, bridges and/or tunnels. For example, here is a simple layout with shape of the digit '8' with two stations and with predefined heights of the tracks:

If the tracks in the lifted middle section are set as bridge, the layout will look as follows:

If the tracks in the other (lowered) middle section are set as tunnel, the layout will look as follows:

To look through terrain, you can switch to “Wireframe” mode, using View > Terrain > Wireframe from menu bar in 3D viewing mode. To make terrain invisible, use View > Terrain > Invisible.

Quality vs. Speed of terrain generation is controlled from Tools > Settings > 3D View. It is recommended to keep Automatic setting, which is default – the program will automatically adjust quality/speed of terrain calculations according to your layout. Large layouts with complex track development will require more time for rendering of the terrain. You can turn off terrain generation if you prefer old, flat baseboard view or if terrain calculations are too slow for you.

Terrain engine will help for better visualization of multileveled layouts and is cornerstone in SCARM development, because all future 3D objects with assigned heights depend on the terrain shape. I will create terrain modeling interface so you will be able to create your own mountains and valleys in SCARM.

Hope that you will enjoy the new features – more will come soon Wink
