Interested in australian model trains or trains

  bobisbob2143 Beginner

Hi everyone I have created a site I hope you could check and leave me feedback. It is a work in progress and help would be great. However it is for austrailan model trains and train only. I will be expanding only if there is enough interest.

Here is the site:

http://trainmodels.webnode.com/

Please post you feedback here or on the site.
Thanks

AND BY POSTING IN ALL CAPS YOU EXPECT someone to really respond?

And posting in the wrong sub-forum won't help much either. That's probably the main reason for no replies...

Moved to "Model Railways" forum.

Having given it a quick look over in about a minute or so, here are my initial thoughts:

-Can users upload their own pictures? Doesn't look like it.
-Nobody is going to pay for "full functionality", whatever that means, especially when I can use picasa/imageshack/flickr/tumblr/blog etc and put a link here for free.
-What differentiates your site from others and would I want to return to it? I don't really see an answer to that question.

What future content are you hoping to add? Information, tools etc?

I know this sounds harsh, but I hope you take it constructively.

Keep your money in your pocket, use Railpage to all its capability and spend the extra time more meaningfully rather than creating a high cost-low visitor website.

Cheers,

From a design and functionality perspective its a good site.

From a content perspective its fairly light on, but a good start.

Good luck with it and keep enjoying the hobby.

Dont let a few negatives comments make u call it quits!   Ther seems to be a lot of 'knockers' on Railpage, just need to sort out the "wheat from the chaff" so to speak!   Keep trying

He wanted feedback and I gave constructive criticism.

Only wanting positive responses kind of defeats the purpose of asking for feedback, doesn't it?

Got to agree with Appleby here you ask for feedback then you have to take the good or the bad. Too many these days only want to hear the good parts and not the bad parts, if you fix up the bad parts you will more than likely have a good site, but it might not be as easy as taking a pat on the back for the good parts though.  Rolling Eyes

But then sulking and packing up his twack etc was not a good sign either, you have to work on a site to get it up and running it will not magically do so without some effort on the owners part, this site would have been the same from small things, great things grow. 8)

Look, call me harsh, but I commented on the all caps in my first post because my first impression was that we have a "OMGWTFBBQTWAINSCOOLROOLY11111ELEVENTY!!!!ONE" type of person.

I could be wrong.

But the removal of the web page seems to strengthen my position rather than weakening it.

These build-your-own website are a great resource, however by using them you can make your own website look as professional and slick as any professionally designed site, or you can make them look cheap and nasty as you want.

All mine I have ever built and published are of a very high standard and almost no one would be able to tell I was employing a free site.

Regarding our opening poster: no need to crack the sads, mate. You asked for feedback - you got it. Sounds like you stumbled across the craze which is free, "build-your-own websites" and thought they were on a winner. I suspect a little more thought was needed into why you actually were creating the site? Purpose? Reason?

My comments were not aimed at the 'constructive criticism", but rather not to pull it because of one or 2 bad feedbacks, rather act on them, work with them to achieve what the original poster/web site creater wanted to achieve.  If we all pulled up stumps after the first couple of comments said something was no good or would not work, none of us would get very far in life and not much would be achieved.  I am sure someone said to NASA that going to the moon couldn't be done either.

Very Happy

Yeah I wanted feedback but I did not want insults

That is the last thing I have to say.

You didn't want insults? You come to the wrong place I'm afraid.

Seriously I am very critical of the childish exchanges which go on here on this forum on a regular basis, however I have read over the complete two pages of this thread and I find nothing even coming close to what you describe as 'insults'. You asked for 'feedback'  - you got it. Perhaps harsher than you really wanted.

As someone who has had many years experience in developing professional sites using these free 'build-your-own' sites, I would have like to have critiqued your work and offered you some feedback, but you "took your bat and ball and ran home to mum" prematurely. Oh well.....

+1.

Actually, this is probably the *safest* place for you to throw your ideas about.  Apart from the comments from heisdeadjim (who can be a bit of a misanthrope at times
), all the comments were straight to the point.  They may not have blown sunshine in places where the sun is not meant to shine, but they *were* honest.  Other places would have torn you to pieces, without regard to your feelings on the matter.

Oh, and if captaintoot has joined up for the sole purpose of making a useless dummyspit, he'll find the door very quickly.
Actually, seeing as his post is pointless, I'll delete it as soon as i'm done here (for those of you reading this after the event.)

I dunno, you modellers are a funny mob at times. Smile
