I'm sure Lex Luthur from the Superman movies is a noted O scaler, so far the list of fictional characters is a whos who of the disfuctional and meglomaniac, wait, that may describe most of us.....

I think he is fictional, haven't seen him in ages.

  David Peters Dr Beeching

What about Australias own "Malcolm", well trams really but close enough.

This can go on forever really as many film and television especially american focus on affinity with trains. Also model trains only verus live trains

David, the director of public prosections from 'Crownies' - many bachmann and lima in office and frequently highlighted. Whoever bought the models for the show knew exactly what to buy as he had a Lima 3830, Santa Fe and Union Pacific Locomotive too. HO or O Gauge . Made a mess of them a few times.

Dr Mallard from NCIS - namesake Hornby model. In an episode not that long ago ducky is oiling his maintaining his model using surgical syringes and tweezers

Pete? the dad from Alf.

Tom Cruise's character  in Risky Business

Both Lionel

A very notable one is  Bobby "Bacala" Baccalieri from the Sopranos. He has an American Flyer set in his garage and is sometimes in full choochoo mode with hat when Tony Soprano calls him. Bobby tried to get his goth son interested but did not care. A few times the mob made fun of his hobby. Bobby was gunned to death while in a hobby store purchasing a rareAmerican Flyer train set.  He did not really get into trains until the later seasons until he settled with Tony's sister. Whatever Gauge that is.

Malcom counts as he had models of trams, especially at the begining of the film when his flatmate visits. HO or O?

Doc Brown does not really count as a model train buff. Although he expressed his desire to be an engineer he only modeled the Hill Valley railway because he is a a scientist. Go back through the trilogy he apologises for his models not being 'to scale'

The game trilogy also highlights this as it shows off additional dioramas he has built. . He is just pedantic and accurate not neccessarily a model railroader.

When did Lex Luthor have a trainset? Either of the Lex Luthors from any of the movies live or animated.

There are many fictional Japanese series about gunzels and railfans. Theyd count. they do show models in those. HO Guage or N

The Stig is a closet railfan but will never admit what gauge is his favourite.

Itchy and Scratchy battle each other using model trains.

Any movie with a rich person or kid might have model trains in it.

Real trains a little easier than model to remeber eg The number of times Bugs Bunny, Road Runner and Wile E Coyote battle each other using trains has got to count.

  Draffa Chief Commissioner

John Patterson from For better or For Worse took up trains during his mid-life crisis.  He had both an indoor layout (that took over Elly's laundry) and a garden railway.
  hanovale Deputy Commissioner

PC Reg Hollis from The Bill.

Many of us suspect that Reg Hollis was the model for our own DPC who has been remarkably quiet since being consecrated as part of the establishment (and if none of that means anything to you then you probably weren't part of the NSW HO scene ten to fifteen years ago).

When Doc's future lady love arrives at the blacksmiths shop and apologises for interupting, Doc says they are just doing a spot of model railroading.

Inventor Charles Edmonton (who became a victim) on an episode of Midsomer Murders...

Also Matthew Sykes from the Alien Nation TV series.

Plus the Father-in-law on My Hero, and (not shown on screen but mentioned) Hyacinths father on Keeping Up Appearances.

Malcolm, IRRC, had multiple scales.

  xdford Chief Train Controller

Joey Newton in "Fury" built an O scale Lionel Set in an episode in the early 60's.

"Rusty" the son in the "Danny Thomas" show in the early 60's had a large layout in his bedroom scene

The young doctor in "The Flying Doctors" in the first series had quite a serious modelling effort in the first series which was not carried over when he returned from wherever.

Character on Neighbours had an older Hornby set... don't ask me who as I don't know that show at all just the rest of my tribe watched it on and off ... (it was better off!!!!)

I'll think of some others later!

I believe there was a layout in some shots of the Miniature killers place on CSI.

Wallace from Wallace and Grommit.

Specifically, "The Wrong Trousers" when Grommit's birthday present gets delivered by a (presumably G scale) train in the living room and of course the scene where Grommit is getting chased by the penguin on the track and starts laying track at a rapid rate etc etc.  Still makes me laugh.

Herb Melnick's layout from Two and Half Men is HO.  Memorable from the time he and Charlie have two hookers over and Herb is looking at the layout and says "best HO money can buy" and Charlie says "you don't have to spell it, they know what they are".

Some people just watch too much TV.

But in your case Trevor I know it is because you have been around for soooo long, he he he.

A train set appeared for a fleeting moment in a movie in the last week but I can't remember what it was, shame on me.

There is a HO layout in the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" in which the guy builds a model of the mountain on it.
