Not sure if this is true, but I did hear sometime ago that they were now  taking all drivers in house and getting rid of hiring thru places like Skilled

Correct.

BHP and Skilled can no long employ anyone else until accommodation can be sourced.

Just spoke to someone up there, there is one more school then they have run out of accommodation. BHP don't have any camp space left either so Skilled drivers cant even get BHP shirts.

Controller, we could only hope. BHP goes to direct employment they will get 100 drivers without a problem from Rio......very very unhappy place to be at the moment.

I take it there would have been a few from Rio apply for the Fortescue EOI advertised a few weeks ago then.

I got an email back from Fortescue stating they were blown away by the amount of applications they received and it was going to take some time to create a short list.

I know of a few people who have left BHPBIO in a number of different jobs (rail ops, track maintenance etc to go over to FMG and they all say that life if much better working for FMG compared with BHPBIO......I think there is less political smeg

So what is BHP going to do because of the driver shortage,is another camp going to be built or are they thinking the same way as Rio with driverless trains and does anyone know what is the go with the Expressions of Interest for Drivers (RIO & FMG)

BHPB is building a new marshalling yard with associated Loco and Ore car facilities  at Mooka on both sides of the Mainline I have been told, approx 30km's out of Hedland, and there is a new camp to be built near this yard,The yard apparently wont be operational till early next year. The camp would be required before this to house the constuction workforce I would imagine, and then once the yard is operational BHPB FIFO staff would move in.

As for the Rio and FMG jobs, just like BHPB they are constantly expanding which means more trains and more drivers,In Rio's case maybe only more until they get their Automatic trains running in 2014/2015.

So what's going on at BHP then? Is it the threat of driverless trains the reason why they are jumping ship?

There's no threat of ATO for BHP, at least, not enough to be concerning crews so much that they'll pull up stumps and go somewhere else. Hell, Rio haven't even run a revenue ATO train yet. No doubt BHP and FMG are keeping an eye on how well it works and would probably like to introduce it at some stage themselves, but it's still years away from going oprational for either of them.

IT's probably more a case of "the grass being greener" on the other side, as seems to be the case in depots around the country.

There may have been a fair few of the contract drivers from BHPB put in their expression of Interest for the FMG jobs as their has been quite a wait for a BHPB shirt and the money is rumoured to be better at FMG for recent starters so the prospect of a Permanent job and more money is a convincing argument to jump ship if the opportunity arose.
