Over the past week some of the 3 car N sets have been re configured so as to create additional capacity. set VN 8 has been created as ACN 24/BRN34/ACN57/BRN 56 /BN 55 , set FN 9 as ACN 27/BRN32/BN26 /BN 17 and Set VN 6 created as ACN 18/BRN 38/ACN42/BRN41/BN14.
The withdrawal of the Z cars from traffic has seen a number of carriage roster alterations, with Sprinters replacing H set runs, VL units replacing passenger trains etc. 3 car set SH 35 ran a peak hour solo run to Geelong yesterday as an example.
It is expected the problem with Z car bogies will be around for a very long time. If they ever return to service. V/Line would be barganing for more DMU units from the government. Why else ??
It is interesting that during the 1990s bogies were removed from then stored ex 4 Vinelander SJ sleeping cars which are of the "Overland" type, not the mainline or commonwealth type that are subject to the cracking fatigue and placed under Z type cars , so in fact 4 cars are effectively withdrawn from service with bogies that are suposedly safe, as the ex overland PCJ vans on standard guage with the same bogies and as are the BJ , RBJ & PCO vehicles on the Overland all of which are all still in service!!!
