New Car Set FN3 and other V/Line fleet changes

That would make a 2-hour gap instead of the 1-hour gap that seems to exist on the inter urban lines. A 2-hour gap to Geelong on a Saturday afternoon would be a complete debacle, given that most services on weekends and 6-car and almost entirely full.

"alstom_888m"

I think the suggestion is that the Intercity trains run in addition to the stoppers. So, after the Warrnambool departs Southern Cross, a Marshall departs 5 minutes later. Ie the hourly interval is maintained because the intercity trains dont form part of the interurban pattern.

Yes, more or less.

Are the Socimi bogies trialed under LH33 compatible, if not can they be made compatible with the Z cars?
That's 3 cars back with an overhaul of the bogies.
If these were successful, could not more be made to replace those bogies deemed beyond repair?

I wonder why they didnt turn the ACN and BRN on the end of VN9 to make it ACN-BRN-BN-BRN-ACN.....

Probably didn't have time. Everything's moving very quickly at the moment and they're playing catchup. Kinda feel sorry for them.

Are they rearranging the H sets to form an extra set? Also, how are services coping without the unreserved car(s)?

"712M"

VNet has be altered to only reserve First Class and Car B only with Car C the new unreserved car even with the evening dwn and morning up Warrnambool running as 2x 3-Car NSets.

"VN9" is now "VN8" with PH453 which has been running the evening dwn Shepp and morning up. Running as ACN-BRN-ACN-BRN-BN.

So aside from sets 1, 8, 15 and 16, have any other sets been semi-permanently extended to more than 3 cars? i.e. the dual Warrnambool sets, are they shuffled on a regular basis or are the same sets usually coupled?

What's the crowding like nowadays?

Just heard on channel 9 news that 22 "Z" type cars have been withdrawn over safety fears. I assume this means the BTN, BZN, and BCZ cars.

"alstom_888m"

So what's the possibility now of VLine wanting/begging to borrow heritage carriages from Steamrail, SRHC, & 707 Operations?

"Carnot"

I'd say low to non-existant, as the preserved carriages are S and Z cars anyway, not counting the old SAR ones

"Greensleeves"

plus havnt they got the harry potter set in storage anyway at newport they could get back out ?

  kuldalai Chief Commissioner

The H sets are now made into 9 x 6 car sets with one H car spare .

The stored S cars (5 of) would have the same issue with aged bogies and supect fatigue cracking .

Since the lack of Z cars in the FN/VN sets, there is now potentially 2 chances to get a all MK2 Combo. N474 and (V)N18 ran the last up Bairnsdale last night, an all red combo.
  SN7 Chief Commissioner

Over the past week some of the 3 car N sets have been re configured so as to create additional capacity. set VN 8 has been created as ACN 24/BRN34/ACN57/BRN 56 /BN 55 , set FN 9 as ACN 27/BRN32/BN26 /BN 17 and Set VN 6 created as ACN 18/BRN 38/ACN42/BRN41/BN14.

The withdrawal of the Z cars from traffic has seen a number of carriage roster alterations, with Sprinters replacing H set runs, VL units replacing passenger trains etc. 3 car set SH 35 ran a peak hour solo run to Geelong yesterday as an example.

It is expected the problem with Z car bogies will be around for a very long time. If they ever return to service. V/Line would be barganing for more DMU units from the government. Why else ??

It is interesting that during the 1990s bogies were removed from then stored ex 4 Vinelander SJ sleeping cars which are of the "Overland" type, not the mainline or commonwealth type that are subject to the cracking fatigue and placed under Z type cars , so in fact 4 cars are effectively withdrawn from service with bogies that are suposedly safe, as the ex overland PCJ vans on standard guage with the same bogies  and as are the BJ , RBJ & PCO vehicles on the Overland  all of which are all still in service!!!

Very interesting statement there. It has been brought up before but nothing else said. Will be very interesting to see what happens.

It has been mentioned in the past that all Z cars could be re-configured into 5 or 6 car sets and limited to running peak services on the Geelong line but going by your above statement it seems as this isn't even an option now.

If minimizing kms is the name of the game then the best short term solution would be to form the Z cars into 3 x 7 car sets, or 3 x 6 car sets with a few spare cars  and use them only on Peak Geelong services Mon to Frid would barely run up 150 kms a day .

With the 41 bg  N cars well you form them into 4 and 5 car sets .

With the latest order of VL cars VLP will have more than enough V/Locity cars really . What VLP needs to be doing now is purchasing a new generation Commuter DMU with greater car width, 5 abreast seating, double width doorways etc for use on nearer Commuter services like Geelong, Bacchus Marsh and Kyneton . Also potentially for such units to also replace the 55 H cars which are nearing 60 years of age .

-Bogies from PCJ 492 are at UGL Rail for overhaul.
-SN16 is getting a semi repaint, after the rather poor touch up job.
-A60 is back from Newport also semi repainted. (and looking better than faded A66)
-N9 as seen now with BN17 (ex FN6)

All I can say is I hope they get some Zs back for easter traffic...

Won't matter so much as there's a proposed closure of Ballarat, Bendigo and Seymour lines for RRL work March 28-April 1st going by the VLine website.

A recent photo on Vicsig shows N474 being stripped back for it's repaint. It won't be much longer and all of the Ns will be done (would be nice if they left just one in the old livery, just for us gunzels, but that's not realistic).
