Anyone who has not attended an assessment centre should not be holding their breath waiting for a call.
By pure chance I met someone on the weekend who attended an assessment centre back in March. This person (I won't say whether male or female) was successful at the assessment and the subsequent medical. Their police checks were also all good.
This person told me that the May and July courses were filled not in order of the merit list, but in the order that assessments and medicals were received.
Anyway, back in early May they received an email saying "Apologies for the delay, but here is an update. May & July filled already, we will be in contact in late May or early June to discuss placement in a course in August or later".
They have had no contact since then and it is now early July.
If this is typical of the way that Metro treat their staff, I am having some reservations as to whether I want to be employed by them.
For people that work there now, is this typical behaviour?
I exchanged contact details with the person involved as they promised to update me on any progress.
With their permission I will update this website when any further info comes to hand.

To quote a mate who works for them: "If he thinks that's bad, he might as well turn around now and never look back."

He would be correct, I also work for them and things do take a lot of time (not always but the important stuff does - for good reason) - there are a lot of people to screen, and each session takes a few hours, so getting through the list is going to take a long time.

But to be fair we were warned that it could take 6 - 12 months to get a call/email

Michy, maybe you missed the point.
This person has already been through all of the screening and medicals etc. Metro committed to getting back to them regarding a place in the August course by late May/ early June yet they have had no contact from Metro since that time.
It just seems incredibly haphazard and unprofessional.

Perhaps they should make a phone call then, waiting isn't going to get you anywhere, and there has been at least one Assessment Centre since March that I know of - medicals etc...

I asked whether they had made any contact themselves and they said that they had made a number of phone calls which went to voicemail every time. They left messages each time and have never had a call returned, and in addition to this they have also sent emails which have not been replied to.
The more I hear, the worse it gets.
The actions (or inaction) of HR seems to point to serious issues with the courses as I can't imagine that an organisation could be so unprofessional and lacking in common courtesy deliberately.

I hope this isn't giving them second thoughts, how horrible.

I believe that the lady who was leading the recruitment has now moved to another department and another lady has taken over.

Not sure on details of who it is, but it may explain the lack in communication at the moment.

Might be a silly question, but just wondering if while we study we have any assigned time off during the course?
I am just trying to work out when to take my holiday. I am obviously going to take a week off before I start but, not sure if I should save up and make my trip a big one later on, or just have a quick one before I start.

Yes, you do. You'll be told when your holidays are during your induction.

So, Michy have your circumstances changed. Have you now attended an Assessment Centre and been offered a place on a course?

They have told us "tentative" dates.

Tentative means that you are given the dates you should be starting but that it isn't 100% locked in yet, so you may start in January rather then December, or you may have been told November but they had a spot available in October, etc...

There are a lot of dates and the dates are up until mid next year I believe? I was given 4-5 months at this stage.

thanks michy. I was just wanting to see, around about, where they were up to, in filling the expected courses that they expected to run from what they said in the info sessions. (i knew what tentative meant lol) I already figured no dates are confirmed

Just an update on the situation of the acquaintance that I mentioned upthread: The person has finally received communication from Metro, however not the communication that they were expecting. This person actually received an employment contract in the mail with an offer to join an upcoming course.
While I was hearty in my congratulations, it also burns a little as it is looking increasingly more likely that although I was in the top 300 odd on the merit list, I will miss out this time and have to go through the process again when it is next advertised.

Please everyone, keep any updates coming as there is still a glimmer of hope that I will get a call for an assessment centre before the end of next year.
I will keep looking in here from time to time and if my circumstances change I will advise any developments, good luck all.

What are the normal classroom hours? My initial info pack tells me that there is a 3 day induction at Spring St which starts @8.00am, but there is no mention of what the start times etc are once the classes begin.
Also, during the initial 38 weeks, how long is it before we start having different starting times and locations?
Any assistance and advice would be most appreciated,

Your normal classroom hours will be typically 8 til 4 unless the Training Officer indicates otherwise.

I'd answer your question about differing starting times and locations, but I'm not too sure these days as to the structure of the new training scheme. Differing start times and locations will happen once you are allocated an OJT (on-the-job trainer). While with an OJT you will follow their shifts.

GvhftrKijl - thanks for the information, I was wondering on the class times myself - I suspected but wasn't sure.

Congratulations cragieburn. I'm in the class which started on 1st July. We received the same info pack but the reality is a little different. Our 3 days induction at spring st was only one day. The rest of the week was induction at Flinders St. Our classroom hours are (officially) 8am -3:36pm. My info pack also said the bulk of the training would be at Newport. The vast bulk of the training is at Flinders St. They are changing (extending) the course as we go along. At this stage it's quite possible that we will all end up back on something similar to the old 73 week course. You'll get more info on this as you go. Again, congratulations and good luck.
