i have noticed that on the gawler line there is a station by the name of kudla that is located in the middle of nowhere, not near ANY houses, just a few farms.

why is this station still kept open as it is barely used from when i have been on the gawler line?

i know i have rambled on about the belair line stations being reopened as they are in a residential area but here's a stations that SHOULD be closed!

I've seen a few people get off and on at that stop but Ill agree its definitely the least used station on the entire network. Greenfields is another infrequent station used on the line that probably also deserves to go due to its proximity to the Mawson Lakes station.

It exists for historical reasons, no doubt involving the local farming.

If you head due east along the dirt road that heads off at an angle you get to Dalkeith Caravan Park. I known the caravan park has been there for some significant time, but I can't find any information on how long.

It is actually surprising how many people use that station. I would go as far to say that Nurlutta gets used less than what Kudla does.

Greenfields also surprisingly has a fair amount of patronage, even though it is close to Mawson Lakes, probably unneeded though given the proximity.

North Adelaide is barely worth stopping at, even at the times we do stop there.

Kudla and Nurlutta used to be step downs like Glenalta and Pinera; the latter were complete with train stop indicators.

Greenfields is a relatively new station at the south western corner of the Parafield Airport and one I used quite often going to the (then) SAIT Levels Campus.

There are quite a number of houses in the area and I would assume the station was built to cater for these.    For a time it was a bus interchange point.

Pedestrian access to Mawson Lakes is problematic since developments tend to be self-contained with no thought to movement between the 2.   There was a track to the Levels campus constructed in the late 1970s complete with its resident magpie who defended his tree (there was only one) with great vigor.    

This track ran parallel to the railway to a bridge over the creek, then directly across the paddock to the SAIT.     This track could form the basis of a path between Greenfields and Mawson Lakes were it still intact.    It seems years since it was useable.

The path across the paddock was still there when I started studies at UniSA in 2002 (wow it's hard to believe that was 11 years ago now) but built over when the housing development started.  The path parallel to the track still exists but was fairly overgrown last I saw it.  

Greenfields used to have a connecting bus service to/from Salisbury via Paralowie (possibly the 411 IIRC?). It was quite a well used station as most people I knew who lived anywhere from Paralowie/Parafield Gardens would catch that bus to Greenfields to board a train to the city. I doubt there are any terminating services there now as it's only an extra 2 minutes up the road to ML.

The 411 used to terminate at Greenfields, operating from Salisbury Interchange. Upon opening of Mawson Lakes, the 411 was redirected to the interchange.

Erm...which stations have been closed recently? aside from Keswick which is getting sort-of relocated...

I don't believe it's an Adelaide metro decision, it's the decision of the State Government in conjunction with the executive body, which is, DPTI. Just wait for more urban sprawl and the farming land will become housing estates.

The reasons behind the closing of those inner suburban stations were:

• Demand, not enough persons used them.
• Availability of viable alternative PT
• Operational

This last item became a necessity when the Belair line became single track. Three extra stops would have added to journey times and interfered with crosses further adding to journey times. To see the example of this look at the discussion about alternate trains beginning/terminating at Blackwood.
