Bayside X'Traps

  Tribitaka Station Master

Hi,

Was on a train from South Yarra to Flinders at approx. 4:30 today and it was a Siemens train coming from Sandringham.
Anyway, to my surprise I saw an X'Trap travelling alongside towards Richmond from the eastern platforms (One of the cars was motor car 16M.) I was however unsure where it was coming from!
I then saw a second X'Trap travelling towards the South Yarra east most platforms at the exact same time!

Have they already started revenue X'Trap services on the Frankston line?

The required signalling and safeworking alterations have not yet been carried out.  Xtraps cannot run in service on Caulfield Group services at this time.

Metro staff perhaps?
  Tribitaka Station Master

I actually asked one of my friends and he recalled the one arriving at South Yarra had no passengers and no destination on it.
And the one leaving only had people in one carriage and they were all standing.

Sounds exactly like tests and staff!

I was waiting at Caulfield this last Thursday morning for my Frankston train and a X'Trap pulled into Caulfield platform 4 at around 7.10am.  It waited around for about 10 mins then pulled out of platform 4 and headed back to the city, 4 mins before the Cranbourne train was due. Bit of an unusual sight for that time of the morning, actually a bit of an unusual sight for any time of the day. I do remember times about five or six years ago when a X'Trap set was sent down to the Westall yards to stable for the day off-peak, returning to the city in time for the afternoon peak.

I saw a Siemens on the Glen Waverley line a couple of weeks ago. It was doing signal sightings and platform clearance tests IIRC

Yes it was testing the new DTRS.

Anyway, back on topic...

If X-Traps are cleared to run on Frankston or Cragieburn lines why aren't they running revenue services on those lines? Don't X-Traps get stabled at Cragieburn or something like that?
  Tribitaka Station Master

But how would a Frankston train (or any other Caulfield Group Line) be routed to a North Melbourne Group line without skipping a station in the City Loop, or doubling up on one?

Xtraps are not cleared to run in service on those lines.

Signals and driver's platform-vision mirrors / monitors require shifting to take account of the Xtrap central driving position.  They are currently all set for the more normal left-hand driving position found on all other trains.

A compromise position has to be established, agreed, the alterations signed off on, funded and put in place before those trains can run in service.  Currently they may only run out of service on test runs under special conditions.

The whole process is steadily taking place but it won't happen overnight.

Xtraps are not currently stabled at Craigieburn.   They are berthed at North Melbourne, Epping and Bayswater with some in sidings at other locations on the Burnley and Clifton Hill service  groups including Upper Ferntree Gully, Ringwood, Burnley, Eltham and Clifton Hill.

Tribitaka
Many Frankston trains already do not serve the City Loop as they run straight on to or from Werribee which is on the Northern Group.

If other destinations or through-routing were required they would do the same.  Departing Flinders Street they can cross to the Northern "loop" track on the viaduct.  Simple.

Yes, the rail lines which cannot run X'Trapolis trains will either be given to V/Line or converted to light rail or bike tracks/rail trails. Siemens trains will be converted to DMUs and Comeng cars will be modified to supplement broad gauge N sets and H sets. The odd Hitachi will still run to Belgrave and Lilydale in 40°C heat. Smile

Keep in mind, they are doing work to make Xtraps run to Frankston and Werribee. Maybe this is the start of it.

Nothing overly unusual about this. Probably going to the Epping wash to have a thorough clean after another unfortunate incident somewhere.

Any reason they don't use the wash at Craigieburn?

Maybe they have 'special' cleaners at Epping that they don't have at Craigieburn. (And they are special, i can guarantee that)
In all seriousness, I don't know, I'd never thought to ask.
