Noticed an interesting set combo at 8:37 this morning heading west out of Redfern. R-set plate with no number on the front just below driver window and the normal plate in the proper place. Forgot to see what it was, but the first two cars had solid windows like it was an aircon set. Trailing 4 cars were set S18.

Is anyone yet to notice some customer information panels on stations have had their blue and white headings covered with silver stickering?

No, not weird at all.  I've been on K sets with 600 run numbers hundreds of times this year, not to mention the many times last year.

Seems like the new trains in the 600 series (S & K sets) are next to become A sets.

From memory that's an older desto software version.  There's a handful or less of sets with the older software version (current version is V13 from memory).  If memory serves correct, the Version 12 ones don't have Hornsby via Mac Park, or Epping.

Does anyone know why the 12:53pm (Hornsby time) train to Newcastle was delayed by 6 minutes and more importantly why it needed to change from platform 5 to 4?

It's a pretty simple task to change the urban to the down main instead of the down relief. There could have been a train in turnback 2, or a signal failure, or a track failure. It's not like people had to walk up over the bridge.

4 mins would be tolerable but not 6?

I'm surprised MLVD even mentioned it like it was out of the ordinary or something special.

There can be changes occasionally to the platforms that trains depart from depending on operational requirements or desires.

Platform changes happen every day of the week, every week of the year.

Nothing unusual about that.

I was at Strathfield around 9pm a few weeks ago, the Melbourne XPT was parked at P3.  They were having a security issue and a baggage issue, the latter a bloke with an oversized parcel who simply wasn't parsing what was being said to him, and the former an unticketed person refusing to move from a seat.  The driver marched down the platform to work on the situation.  The Transit Officers rolled in (eventually).  It was taking quite some time.

The Wyong service was held up behind all of this.  Couldn't see it, but odds-on it was stopped at signals on the Down Main just around the bend.  The delay happened far too late to cross the Wyong train over to the Suburban - even if that was considered a reasonable plan - and so it was just late by 10 minutes.  No fault of anyone involved with operating that service, and as it happens, 6 minutes or 10 minutes is small beer in a 2-hour trip.

TrackSAFE with Thomas & Friends

Tuesday, 13 August
1.00pm to 4.00pmPlatform One, Central Station

Calling all 2–5 year olds!

Children between the ages of 2 and 5 are invited to attend this free TrackSAFE with Thomas & Friends event in their favourite Thomas gear. Peep peep!

They will meet a life-size Thomas and learn about rail safety.

The chance to meet Thomas in person makes this an unmissable event for your child, but it is more than just fun. TrackSAFE with Thomas & Friends has been especially designed to equip 2–5 year olds with rail safety knowledge that will stay with them for life. It could even save their life.

What your child will experience

Over around one and a half hours children will meet the life-sized Thomas the Tank Engine and join in fun rail safety learning activities with other children.

 • 'I know how to be trackSAFE' – a platform safety drawing activity
 • 'I can show I am trackSAFE' – to practise strategies for being safe around trains and tracks.
 • Practise getting on and off the train safely.
 • Story time – a special guest will share Thomas & Friends books in the reading corner.
There will be face painting and a balloon artist, plus the opportunity for your child to explore, and even have a photo taken with Thomas. It's a fun afternoon of rail safety activities designed to help keep your child safe whenever they catch the train with you.

You can post a photo of your child at TrackSAFE with Thomas and Friends on Twitter: #RailSafetyWeek2013

I wasn't complaining, I was just seeing if there was anything interesting behind it.
I couldn't see why they needed to change the platform.
