    The whole setup is flawed we had 2 new buses enter service this week (Mon) and still no readers or consoles even though 2 older members of the fleet had theirs spirited away last week. Now the fun for the cattle (Passengers) begin trying to touch on the bases. I tell them no equipment installed so they try the back reader bases instead. But this a minority, had a lady last night wanted a Top up I said no go as for no machine she said she would wait for the next bus as she wanted no problems. I had to convince her it would be alright and when we got to the station she sh*t herself when 2 PSO's walked by. Now a problem with the bus setup when the driver needs to change settings for a new trip and presses the last enter button the readers display "In Service" please wait but being cattle they cant and go to the nearest bus to touch off to find they have touched on again only having to wait the 30 secs to touch off again. So not touching off the first bus  they used so I guess the default fare plays. With my training never told this as the training was bullsh*t and never covered the whole setup. I've learn't  more on the run than in class and the last enter button when no one around or leaving the terminus but at least I got certificate to add to my resume #58 whoopee.

    TempeFox, what is the Certificate you were referring to, is that like a Cert III in Myki operations or something like that?

    I was surprised to read today in the Herald-Sun that Ticket Inspectors must first complete a Cert III in "Revenue Protection Officer" or similar that before they are set loose on the public.

    I suppose if they have minimum training prior to going to work they can always blame the staff member for not following protocol if they snot an aggressive passenger.

    That's interesting, thanks for that.  Was it very many hours?  A week?  A day?

    I did a Cert IV though my then employer - a training provider - once and unfortunately I realise in retrospect it was complete bullsh*t, nothing like the same Cert IV they offer at TAFE but then again it didn't cost me anything.  The only thing that was really covered properly was OH&S but they skipped other large slabs of stuff we apparently should have covered.

    As you said earlier, when you get into the real world you've got to tweak that knowledge anyway.

    Personally I think Myki fare structure should be simple and easy to understand and  should be like Sydney smart card fares and example of simple fare system for Melbourne and V/Line commuter services.

    Myki starts today on the Ballarat line. If someone was to start a journey at Spencer Street and swipe their Myki on and forget to swipe off in Ballarat they would only be charged the default fare for zone 1 + 2 as the computer would have no way to know you had taken a country trip. Quite a saving. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    unless the train conductor checks you ticket and resets the default fare to an higher fare!

    It would be soon that people understands this and then some people will tell  the train conductor where go with he/her ticket check, so they can get the cheaper fare.

    I could be wrong here, but something tells me that the conductor sets the location for the end of service, not the passenger's destination.

    I simply don't trust it enough to use it on a Ballarat trip.  I'm still having problems with being charged the metro default fare on account of faulty destination validators and now they expect me to trust it with much bigger figures?  No way, not until I'm forced to.

    The problem for V/Line is that on a full train the conductor will not have time to check every Myki and for a certain part of the Ballarat trip there is no 3G coverage and the Myki device will not work.

    I am going to Melbourne on the weekend, via train from Ballarat.   Had to get my daughter in Ballarat to buy myki cards for family at a cost of over $100 - just to get us started.   Otherwise we would have to get to Ballarat at least half an hour earlier and find the newsagent to buy the cards.   There is no 7-11 in sunny Donald!   Yeah, I know I'll have it next trip, but then it will be something else to remember to bring each trip.   See how it works!

    I reckon you'll find the device doesn't need 3G connectivity to operate.  None of the others do, they just send through all their stuff at the end of the day.  For all we know the handhelds only upload their transaction details when they get back to the station, via wifi.

    Ummmm.....why not just buy them from the station booking office? It shouldn't take any longer to purchase a myki from the staff than it would to purchase a paper ticket?

    I can't seem to find any V/Line timetables that indicate that trains stop there.

    Coaches seem to be the only thing that services Donald, and, looking at the timetables, even they don't stop at the station Confused

    No train service to Donald and even if there was myki isn't valid on services beyond Ballarat.

    It's probably a good idea not to leave it till the last minute to buy them, you'll probably rock up to Ballarat Station to buy one only to be told 'sorry, we haven't had the training yet' or 'it's off-line'. I wouldn't rely on a retailer selling you one - retailers absolutely hate it. I spoke to a 7/11 proprietor recently who told me some franchisees were keen to get rid of myki because the software is hard to use and it's impossible to reverse mistakes; he also said the margins were too thin considering the imposition/training required and they wanted to renegotiate for higher operating margins.

    I have to report I'm starting to really love myki, just like Lynn Kosky predicted.  My frequent use of the 220 has been getting cheaper all the time, another free trip yesterday.  God bless myki, it really is cheaper than Metcard.
