about time. it was put up for sale, no one wanted it. so get rid of it. there is still enough GM's running around if people want to get pics of them.

Completely agree. Perhaps at the time the rebuild commenced, it seemed like a viable option, but the days of wringing life out of old clunkers is long past - either gut the thing and rebuild it (ala GL Class), or scrap them and buy new, modern, fuel efficient, crew friendly, reliable locomotives.

That's not to say I don't enjoy going after the older locos whenever I can, I just recognize the economic reality.

Ever been in a GM? Its like they were built during the war held together with pop rivets, operators are buying plenty of new stuff now that most are on their feet.

The nostalgic part of me wonders if they could build new locomotives that look like old fashioned ones?

It would be good to see some modern CLF or DL variants but it looks like everything has gone NR and LDP, anything is better than the CM ugly duckilings.

I don't have an issue with the CM's, I like them.

CM's look good in the CFCLA livery. Once you get over the big windows they are not bad looking units. They look beasty running long nose Smile

Having actually worked on the above, I've got to say they aren't particularly attractive.

Does anyone know which CD Dodd yard it went to? Noticed the front end of a bulldog out the front of CD Dodd Forrestfield WA (Dundas Rd). Had no paint though, and what looked like the CL/CLF mansard roof

That's GM30....   It was to be renumbered 3401 and it might have had a new class letter...

The rebuild of GM30 would have been equivalent to the GL class rebuild.
Forrestfield lacked the design capability of UGL, and once the new engine, new dynamic brakes, new radiators and other gear were in place, designing and building the piping and cabling to connect it all was not a negligible task. I think UGL indicated that the GLs were more costly than they expected, and not just because the engines were in much worse condition than anticipated.

Not completing it was probably the best result for all concerned. The replacement parts not used in GM30 would probably fit any L class.
