S Set/AK Cars

I'm not sure if anyone else managed to get a look at the S/S/AK/AK/AK/S/S set running around the city the last week or so, but it was split up last night/this morning when 8182 took the AK Cars back to Meeks Rd. I was hanging around Central last night and managed to get a few shots, although I felt this one was the most unusual:

Four S Set motor cars all coupled together (the pantograph on the third car was not raised, however). A rather odd sight outside of a maintenance centre, I would think?

I did get a few other shots, I'll try and process them/upload them when I get the chance, but figured this would appeal to our spark buff members!

Here's a shot of the train standing (partially) alongside P18:

I'll let the pictures tell the story, but the basic timeline was that the whole S-AK Set arrived into Sydney Terminal P2. The lead two S Set cars were shunted off into Sydney Yard. 8182 then hooked onto the AK Cars and took them back to Meeks Rd, with the four S Set cars then shunted together to return to FMC.

So yeah, very little coverage of the train actually doing what it was created for, but I'm pleased that I got some coverage of it at all, especially the shunt at the end. Given that one of the Roger track inspection vehicles is designed to replace the AK Cars on the RailCorp/Sydney Trains network, one has to wonder if this type of thing will be performed again?

Great shots.
I noted all 4 power cars stabled at FMC this morning in the siding where the ATP Y sets used to live, and of interest all 4 pantographs raised.

Great shots Raichase. That 4 car motor set would've been interesting to control.

The S set motor cars used were 3063-3982-AK Cars- 3044-3949, just if anyone is interested.

The track recording equipped Roger 800 (MTPV1) won't take over from the AK cars just yet - but I suggest that the March/April or July/August AK runs next year may be the last using the S sets...

The 4-car motor set only had 2 motor cars powering at any one time. They were not designed to be put into that formation and the jumpers between the 2 pantograph ends of the motor cars don't line up and can't be physically jumpered anyway.
On the AK consist, the 4 motor cars were powering as per an 8 car set via a special jumper cable arrangement through the AK cars. This 2/3/2 is the second and final version of MU wiring through the AK cars. The previous occasion was 3/2/2 due to the AK cars only having the wiring along one side of the consist. It has been challenging and an up-hill battle to get to this successful outcome!

Oh good, so there's still time to get more coverage? Excellent, wouldn't mind actually trying to get shots at some of the other locations on the network!

There's a "special" showing up on the indicator boards for the city circle right now. It has been bouncing around allocated times for the past 20 min or so. The last two times I've seen that it has been the S/AK sets doing a loop, so might be worth seeing if it is what is coming. Unfortunately I am now sitting on the train that is right in front of it so won't be able to confirm.

The AK Cars are on a tour of the southern branchlines at the moment, so it won't be them!

"Special" trains are put up on the boards when the system that runs the indicator boards is faced with a train it doesn't understand. This could be as simple as a train running the wrong way around the city circle, or an extra central-central service, to something like a twister move of a train to/from a maintenance centre. It could also in extreme circumstances be things like the AK Cars, trackwork trains, track machines, track inspection vehicles, etc.

Just for the record, sighted at 1910 hours, 27/11/13, AK Cars with the four (4) S set Cars, as mentioned in a previous post.
Cars (country end) 3063, 3982, AK Cars, 3044, and 3949, departing Sydney Terminal bound for Macdonaldtown Sidings.

There was an Audience of Photographers at the country end of Redfern (Platforms 4 and 5) to capture the moment.

It would have moved like a slug. There is no way to couple the electrics of two power cars back to back (with out a plug adaptor box anyway), so the rear two would be 'dead attached'. And since there is no electrical connection, no EP either, so air brakes only.

Slow to start, slow to stop.

The 3rd car pantograph was probably lowered only due to concerns about contact wire uplift with two pans that close together.

I believe that they experimented with a through cable to connect the control jumpers of the S-Set motor cars on either side of the consist, but can't say if they succeeded or not.

It's probably not super visible in this shot when they were dismantling the consist last time they did this type of running (August), but there is what appears to be a control jumper receptacle on the car (the one on the right looks like a dummy, I'm assuming for loco jumpers, but what about the one on the left)?

I think they did get the through MU working. It would have been a very heavy load for 2 Set motors if they hadn't. I was referring to the 4 S motor set returning home when they coupled the two motor pairs back to back for the trip back to Flemington. With out some sort of adaptor magic, back to back power cars can't MU to one another.

Sefton on the down at 1430 today; 8175, AK2383, AK2384, AK2382, 8130. Stopped briefly at the down platform to allow an employee to alight, and departed.

Yes, when coupled up as S/S/AK/AK/AK/S/S, the MU wiring is connected through the entire consist. However, the electrics have 44 wires, the AKs have 27 loco wiring. By chance, there are 27 critical circuits, so they are all connected. Things like doors are not connected.
This took some trialling to prove that it would work. The first trial was 4 car S/AK/AK/4 car S set. Then we had 3 car S/AK/AK/ 3 car S set. The final version is 2/3/2.
The above and special S set motor consist runs under a TOC waiver. Only the 2 leading motor cars power during the transfer to/from the AK cars, the rear 2 just act like trailer cars. When coupled up to the AK cars, all 4 motor cars provide motive power.
The next running of S/AK cars will be March/April 2014. It is anticipated that there will also be a mid-year and end of year run (as per the 4-monthly cycle to record the network).
